"We have in displayed an uncanny ability to elevate the simple to the
complex"

      Comment

This is an edited extract from an address by SA Human Rights
Commission chairman Jody Kollapen August 16, 2006

At the Jubilee Summit of the Southern African Development Community
(SADC) in Gaborone in 2005, then Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa said in
his farewell speech, speaking about the vision of SADC: "Together (as
Southern Africa) we shared, together we endured and together we brought to
triumph the liberation struggle. The spirit of the Frontline States should
invigorate us into action - action that would see SADC emerge as the most
purposeful, most powerful and most regional economic grouping in our
lifetime. The solidarity (in Southern Africa), forged in the heat of
struggle can, today, if properly harnessed, help us forge regional
integration at a greater pace . Let the SADC Summit be the fire around which
people in this region sit - in unity, solidarity and enthusiasm - to chart a
path of survival and prosperity through the jungle of a globalising world."
The struggles in the region were not just about achieving liberation, but
about laying the foundations for democratic government, the advancement of
human rights and the securing of human development, and that the solidarity
we seek is not pre-eminently a solidarity of leaders or of governments, but
of people who seek to live under conditions that foster peace and a better
life.

Endorsing these remarks, President Thabo Mbeki, writing in ANC Today
in August 2005, said that the "spirit of the Frontline States" means "that
as members of SADC we must be ready and willing to work closely together,
understanding that we share a common destiny. It means that all of us must
understand that what we do in any one of our countries has an impact on the
rest. It means that as countries, we will sink or swim together." While
there can be little ambiguity about the nature, import or meaning of these
assessments of our region, our relationships and our interdependence, the
more critical question is whether by our conduct . we have demonstrated a
fidelity to the struggles and the values that underpinned them, and whether
we have constructed our relationships in a manner that demonstrates the
interdependence we articulate, and whether we have collectively come to
understand that sovereignty can never be absolute, but must be exercised and
must, when appropriate, yield to the values, norms and standards we have
agreed upon and determined to be the basis by which we relate to each other
and hold each other accountable.

If we are frank in our assessment, then our response to the ongoing
crisis in Zimbabwe displays neither a solidarity towards the people and the
common struggles that Mkapa referred to, nor does it provide evidence that
we so value the common standards we have set for political and economic
governance, and the observance of human rights that we will demand proper
accountability when they are infringed. The SADC Treaty of 1992 and the 2001
Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security all commit member states to
advance the principles of:

      Solidarity, peace and security.

Human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

      Good governance.

The development of common foreign policy approaches in international
forums.

It is against these political and other imperatives that we must
assess the response to what has been happening for some years now in
Zimbabwe.

Some have denied there is a crisis, others, conceding there is a
problem, have said it is exaggerated, others have appealed for patience,
arguing for the vague and often unstated interventions under way, while
still others have suggested that the governance and human rights standards
used to judge the Zimbabwean state are foreign, having been developed in the
capitals of the West and foisted upon Africa as a quid pro quo for
much-needed aid. The reality for millions of Zimbabwean citizens is a far
cry from the lofty and noble ideals that characterised the struggles of its
people. At the economic level rampant inflation, the ongoing devaluation of
the Zimbabwe dollar, unemployment as high as 70%, and a substantial number
of its people live in poverty. The essentials of a vibrant, functioning
democracy - a free and unencumbered media, an independent judiciary and a
thriving civil society functioning in an environment conducive to the free
and robust exchange of ideas - are all lacking in Zimbabwe. Crisis Zimbabwe
has reported that there were over 300 000 cases of serious human rights
violations between 2000 and 2002.

Some have counter-argued that the adequacy of the ballot suggests that
democracy is not under threat and the so-called crisis is exaggerated. Even
for now conceding the adequacy of the ballot argument, surely democracy is
not only about the public ballot. Amatya Sen, on a visit to the region a few
years ago, distinguished between the public ballot and the public reasoning
perspectives of democracy, the latter referring to the ability of
governments to respond to public reasoning - what he called government by
discussion. The effect of the crisis in Zimbabwe has been devastating.
Millions of its citizens have left and it is estimated that between 1.5 and
3 million are in South Africa.

There have been suggestions that the Zimbabwean problem is complex
and, therefore, will require a complex solution and will take time - my
naivety, I confess, prevents me seeing the problem in such complex terms.
There is, nor can there be, any ambiguity when it comes to the human rights
situation, and in this regard I refer to the work and reports of a UN
mission and an African Commission on Human and People's Rights Mission. In
June 2002, an African Commission mission visited Zimbabwe and its report
found, among other things, widespread violation of human rights; legislation
that repressed freedom of expression, assembly and association; a lack of
independence of the judiciary, and a lack of respect for the rule of law. It
submitted a far-reaching list of recommendations to address the situation,
including interventions. Sadly, the African Union (AU) still has to decide
how to deal with the African Commission Report. It recently granted the
government of Zimbabwe further time to respond to the report.

While due process and audi alteram (hear the other side) are important
principles of natural justice, it must be of serious concern when the AU
dithers and delays in dealing with the report some four years after the
fact-finding mission. This not only undermines the work and the role that
important institutions such as the African Commission must do, but also
reinforces the perception that impunity rather than accountability is the
outcome when serious violations of human rights have occurred. For the
thousands of victims of human rights violations in Zimbabwe, this inordinate
delay is interpreted as a lack of concern, of compassion, of commitment to
the norms and standards that African states collectively agreed upon through
structures such as the AU and the SADC, and for their plight as victims.

And so, to come back to the twin challenges that Mkapa and Mbeki
presented. Does the spirit of the Frontline States - of solidarity, of
unity, of the pursuit of human development - resonate in our response to the
crisis in Zimbabwe? Is the average Zimbabwean citizen entitled to any sense
of hope or expectation that the countries and structures of the region or
continent will intervene with decisiveness to defend the values and norms
that all African states have committed themselves to and which now are so
openly flouted by the government of Zimbabwe? Will the countries of the
SADC, in recognition of the impact that the crisis in Zimbabwe is having on
the region, be more forthright, more decisive and unambiguous in confronting
and addressing the crisis? The track record to date does not look good, yet
history will judge us harshly if we continue to prevaricate, to be
ambivalent and to assign a false and exaggerated meaning to the notion of
sovereignty and to, through our actions, show solidarity to individuals and
leaders rather than to the common values that have brought us together and
which have characterised the political and moral struggles for our
liberation. On the face of it, the choice appears a simple one although we
have in recent times, and in the context of the crisis in Zimbabwe,
displayed an uncanny ability to elevate the simple to the complex.

Al Jazeera International announces setting up of Harare bureau

http://www.ameinfo.com/93996.html

Al Jazeera International, the new 24-hour English-language news and current
affairs channel, headquartered in Doha, announced today that it will be the
first international channel to open a bureau in Harare, the Republic of
Zimbabwe.

Qatar:

'We will be the only international news channel with a base in Zimbabwe,'
said Director of News, Steve Clark on a visit to Harare accompanied by
Managing Editor, Omar Bec and Bureau Chief- Africa, Andrew Simmons.

'Africa is one of the most pivotal places in the world to report from. It is
a continent of hope and change. It is fascinating to be the only
international news channel based in Zimbabwe where we hope to produce a
range of news reports and programmes', continued Steve Clark.

The channel will have an unparalleled presence and unrivalled expertise in
Africa with the Harare bureau giving Al Jazeera International unique access
to Southern Africa.

The channel also announced that it has appointed experienced journalist
Farai Sevenzo as correspondent for Zimbabwe and award winning
camerman/producer Cyrus Nhara based at the Harare bureau.

Speaking on the appointments Andrew Simmons stated,

"Zimbabwe has many untold stories. As a new global network it's crucial that
we tackle all of Africa's big issues with the objectivity and expertise this
continent deserves. Having two of Africa's best broadcast journalists on the
ground in Zimbabwe will bolster our newsgathering operation and give our
viewers an insight they won't find elsewhere."

Sevenzo, over the last three years has been a regular contributor to the
UK's Channel 4 News and to the same channel's Unreported World programme. He
has also contributed to the BBC's African coverage.

'Having worked on Zimbabwean stories over the past 6 years, the opportunity
to report on the ground for Al Jazeera International proved too tempting. Al
Jazeera International is an exciting station with a remit to change the way
the world views news. I shall be part of bringing undiscovered stories from
Zimbabwe and the region. I'm very excited and look forward to the challenge
enormously,' said Sevenzo.

As both a writer and director for film, television and radio, Farai Sevenzo
has switched between documentary and fiction in his coverage of major
African issues. Sevenzo's work in African current affairs has seen him
report on wars in Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Congo and Northern Uganda. As a
documentary filmmaker, Sevenzo recorded the ongoing events in Zimbabwe with
a series of personal observations that began with the award-winning Zimbabwe
2002. In The Children's War, he covered the Lords Resistance Army's hold on
northern Uganda. He has also worked in Africa as an independent filmmaker
and radio producer.

Zimbabwe-born Cyrus Nhara, for the last four years has worked as a Reuters
television journalist in his home country. Nhara has also worked as a
freelance cameraman/producer in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania for
various international broadcasters, including ITN, Channel 4, CBS and the
BBC.

'This is one of the most exciting projects in television history and it's
great to be part of it,' said Nhara.

Nhara won the 2005 Rory Peck Trust Impact Award, and was a 2005 Royal
Television Society cameraman nominee.

Where a basketful of groceries costs a bucketful of cash

Zimbabwe removes zeros from banknotes - but inflation keeps rising

Andrew Meldrum in Pretoria
Thursday August 17, 2006
The Guardian

On the streets of Harare and across Zimbabwe, people of all races and all
walks of life are lugging large satchels, backpacks and suitcases stuffed
full of money. Many are using the cash in wild sprees to buy goods ranging
from cars and stoves to cows. Far from a sign that the country's battered
economy is picking up, the mad spending is a frantic attempt to turn cash
into assets. Poorer Zimbabweans are carrying their money to banks to
exchange it for new bills.

This is Zimbabwe's big currency change-over, a chaotic and confusing
exercise that will see current bills replaced by new notes with three zeroes
removed. For instance, a Z$20,000 note will be replaced by a new Z$20 bill.
The value remains the same - about 17p.
"From zero to hero" is how the exercise has been trumpeted by Gideon Gono,
governor of Zimbabwe's central bank. According to economists, it is nothing
more than a cosmetic change.

Iron-fisted

Knocking off the zeroes will turn a Z$100,000 note into a Z$100 bill, but it
will not reduce the country's hyperinflation, which is raging at more than
1,000% a year, according to Harare economist John Robertson. "That will only
be achieved by fundamental changes in economic policy such as controlling
the budget deficit."

From August 21 old notes will no longer be legal tender, so Zimbabweans are
rushing to spend their cash or deposit it in a bank. But in typically
iron-fisted fashion, President Robert Mugabe's regime is treating people
carrying cash as criminals. Police at roadblocks, border posts and airports
are searching bags to see that no one is carrying more than Z$100m (about
£88). Huge stashes of cash are being seized, particularly from rural
peasants bringing their money to the cities to deposit in banks. More than
3,200 Zimbabweans have been arrested at roadblocks and Z$700bn has been
confiscated, according to the state media. Hundreds of businesses are also
under investigation.

In a macabre twist, mourners transporting their dead to funerals are forced
to open the coffins to prove that they are not smuggling illegal sums of
cash along with the remains of their loved ones.

At Harare airport this week police seized several large containers that held
more than 1 trillion Zimbabwe dollars. The money was being smuggled back
into the country by three large financial institutions, according to the
state-owned Herald, to be exchanged for new currency.

Rampant inflation has rendered the once proud Zimbabwe dollar nearly
worthless. Supermarket shoppers must push a trolley-full of currency to buy
a trolley-full of basic groceries. Calculators, cash registers and cheque
books fail to cope with the number of noughts needed as prices for daily
goods run into millions, houses and cars cost billions and company budgets
are in the trillions. Taking off three zeroes will make the Zimbabwean
currency easier to handle, but only until inflation adds the zeroes back on.

At the official rate of exchange, Z$250,000 is worth one US dollar. But
realistically the Zim dollar is worth even less because no dollars are
available at the official rate. On the illegal but thriving parallel market
it takes Z$600,000 to buy $1.

"Our Zim dollar is useless," said Iddah Mandaza, a Harare factory worker.
"It costs Z$600,000 to take a bus to work. We pay millions to buy a bit to
eat. This striking off the zeroes is not going to change anything. We all
know that. It will be easier to carry money around but it is not going to
stop inflation and it is not going to make shortages of food and fuel
disappear."

The currency switch-over highlights the severity of Zimbabwe's continuing
economic collapse. In eight years, the country's GDP has declined by more
than 40%, an unprecedented contraction by a country not at war, according to
the World Bank. Other economic indicators are equally dire. Unemployment is
estimated at 70-80%. Agricultural production has dropped by 60% and
factories are operating at less than 20% of capacity, according to
economists.

Sabotage

The result of the economic collapse is that Zimbabwe's population, once one
of Africa's most prosperous, is impoverished and hungry. Ten years ago about
30% of Zimbabwe's population lived below the international poverty line. Now
more than 70% do. Mr Mugabe maintains that the economic decline has been
caused by sabotage and sanctions by western countries opposed to his
seizures of white-owned farms.

Ordinary Zimbabweans and economists alike blame Mr Mugabe's chaotic economic
policies, which deny open access to foreign currency, support bloated state
corporations with huge deficits and force banks and pension funds to invest
in government bonds at negative rates. Zimbabwe's budget, according to a new
supplement presented to parliament by the finance minister Herbert Murerwa
on July 27, is running a deficit at 24% of GDP. The government is paying for
its profligacy by printing money. It became too expensive to print standard
currency two years ago so the government began producing cheaper "bearer
cheques", which are printed on only one side and have an unsettling
resemblance to Monopoly money.

The urban rich and the cross-border traders are busy finding ways to avoid
being caught out by the renumeration. Many fear it is the rural poor who
will be left holding the bag of unusable Zim dollars at the August 21
deadline.

"The poor and the poorly educated will be hurt most," said John Makumbe, a
Zimbabwean political science lecturer. "They are being treated like economic
saboteurs. Their money is being seized if they travel with more than Z$100m,
yet they often have school fees to pay of Z$300m. These are supposed to be
Mr Mugabe's strongest supporters, yet they will bitterly remember the day
that the government confiscated their cash.

"There are growing fears that there will be riots over the currency change.
Mugabe's fiercest opposition is the economy. He can rig elections, he can
control the press, but he cannot rig the economy. The economy refuses to
obey his orders."

Hyperinflation: aftermath of war

Germany famously went through hyperinflation in 1923-4, when prices rose by
325,000,000%. On average, prices quadrupled each month. By 1923, the highest
denomination note was 100,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion) marks, and one
dollar was equal to 1 trillion marks. People were being paid several times a
day, and were seen carrying their cash in wheelbarrows.

Despite the notoriety of Weimar Germany's hyperinflation, Hungary saw prices
rise even faster. Between August 1945 and July 1946 prices rose at the rate
of more than 19,000% a month, or 19% a day. But these figures still do not
adequately reflect the extreme rates experienced by Germany and Hungary at
some points during that period. In October 1923, German prices rose by 41% a
day. In July 1946, Hungarian prices more than tripled every day.

China also suffered a bout of hyperinflation in 1948-9 after the government
had spent years printing money to pay for civil war. Currency reform
replaced the yuan by the gold yuan in 1948, at an exchange rate of 1 gold
yuan to 3m yuan. In less than a year, the highest denomination was 10m gold
yuan. The biggest note issued by a regional bank was 6bn yuan, by Sinkiang
Provincial Bank in 1949.

Much later, Argentina went through hyperinflation from 1985 to 1991, by
which time the annual rate was 1,345%. In 1991, the government pegged the
peso to the US dollar and inflation dropped to 7.5% annually by 1993.

Finally, Yugoslavia, or what was left of it, endured the second-highest
hyperinflation. Between October 1 1993 and January 24 1995, prices increased
by 5 quadrillion % - 5 million trillion. The average daily rate of inflation
was nearly 100%.

No beggars banquet

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Editorial

Thursday, August 17, 2006

Zimbabwe's dictator Robert Mugabe makes the starving hunger for colonialism.
Ian Smith, prime minister of the former Rhodesia until Mr. Mugabe was
elected president in 1980, never looked so good.
Mugabe, the monstrous Marxist, finally admitted the painfully obvious -- his
subjects are "begging" for food because he seized and redistributed about
4,000 farms owned by white people to cronies.

Thank his Grain Marketing Board for the shortage of maize meal, the board
being the only entity permitted to deal in the cornlike staple for most of
the 12 million Zimbabweans. Ukrainians who survived the final solution for
private property in the former Soviet Union can empathize. Soviet Marxists
used mass starvation in the 1930s to turn farms into a collective failure.

But in spite of starvation and hyper-inflation of 1,200 percent -- bread can
cost more than 1 million Zimbabwean dollars per loaf -- Mugabe blames
"economic saboteurs" other than himself.

Ignorance of the law of supply and demand is inexcusable -- yet Mugabe now
threatens to redistribute the land he had redistributed.

Imagine the collective despair of the tens of thousands of Zimbabweans
fleeing across the Beit Bridge into neighboring South Africa when they learn
their new homeland just warned 50,000 whites to sell their farms to the
government or face compulsory eviction.

Women of Zimbabwe Arise Assembly

Zimbabwejournalists.com

      By WOZA

THREE HUNDRED AND TWELVE delegates, including 25 men, attended the
annual national assembly of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) this weekend
(11th - 14th August.) Those present were members of WOZA and civic society
organisations.

The theme of the assembly was 'Defending Women Defending Rights - Woza
Moya'. Known as 'Sheroes', the WOZA Assembly honours modern day 'sheroes' -
ordinary women doing the extraordinary -at the same time as the government
of Zimbabwe honours other 'Heroes'.

This year marked the third annual assembly of Sheroes convened to
elect the leadership of WOZA and to motivate members to defend their rights.
The gathering also resolved to form Men of Zimbabwe Arise (MOZA) and elected
a male leader into the WOZA leadership,
      referred to as Mother WOZA.

Proceedings began with a solidarity message from Archbishop Pius Ncube
who asked WOZA to, "stand firm in speaking up and demonstrating against evil
and unjust laws; against brutality, against dictatorship and lack of love
and a government which is self-centred and does not care for its people."

The Assembly was conducted under high security at a secret location in
rural Matabeleland and members passed through countless roadblocks to get to
and from the venue. No incidents were reported, although official
announcement of the Assembly had to await the
      safe arrival of all delegates.

The election of 18 office bearers was conducted under a spirit of
democracy and those elected were prayed for and anointed to continue the
work of WOZA and to birth MOZA. Their names must be withheld for security
reasons. Many positions were hotly contested but several leaders were
returned unopposed. New positions
include Rural Outreach Co-ordinators and a male representative.

Partners from civic society present included Zimbabwe National
Students' Union (ZINASU), Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ),
Zimbabwe United Residents Association (ZURA), Combined Harare Residents'
Association (CHRA), International
Solidarity Association (ISO), Bulawayo Agenda, National Constitutional
Assembly (NCA), Zimbabwe Peace Project, Uhuru Social Forum and the Christian
Alliance.  Representatives from Crisis Coalition - South Africa and the
African Liberation Support
Campaign - Kenya also attended and addressed the meeting on how women
in Kenya and South Africa mobilised so that they could enjoy their rights
without state interference.

Delegates, who are leaders of WOZA, came from 14 communities in
Bulawayo and 15 in Harare, including Seke Rural and Domboramwari. There were
also representatives from new areas of operation, including Insiza, Inyathi/
Nkayi, Njelele/Matopo, Mutare,
      Chegutu and Chimanimani.

The delegates reviewed the WOZA social justice campaign and evaluated
campaigns and strategies before unanimously resolving to press ahead with
non-violent street action in coming months. The following issues were
selected in addition to the normal calendar of
      events and issues:

      - Operation Sunrise, which saw three zeros being dropped from the
currency.  The women argued this is a very short term measure that will not
resolve Zimbabwe's economic crisis.  Instead the women pointedout that the
country needs to drop its leaders, not
      zeros.

      - The high cost of goods and services. There was widespread testimony
of skyrocketing prices and shortages as a result of Operation Sunrise, which
they felt should be renamed 'Operation Zero Benefit'.

      - ZESA.  The women say they are frustrated by frequent unscheduled
blackouts that have damaged appliances.  Additionally they complain they are
forced to pay huge tariffs for an unreliable service.  In Bulawayo women are
also concerned about the power utility's decision to phase out load limiters
and insist that consumers
install new meters at great personal expense.

      - Water problems and utility supplies, delegates in both Harare and
Bulawayo resolved to hold their council accountable for terribly poor
service whilst constantly hiking rates.

      - The women who demonstrated over school fees at the beginning of the
last school term resolved to continue with the street action until the
promises of the liberation war have been fulfilled.

Alongside these national activities, delegates also resolved to
undertake local actions to highlight social injustices within their
communities, including lack of housing and home ownership.

On the second night a special ceremony was held to salute the bravery
of members who have been arrested an average of five times. Those Sheroes
present were invited to sign an Honour Roll. Of the 294 WOZA members
present, 228 women and men signed; some
signing for their children and babies. Before signing, many recounted
their arrests, harassment and abuse while in custody, including assaults by
police and great indignities endured. Several men also came forward and
testified about their experience in custody with WOZA women.

A group of 16 male members of WOZA attended the assembly with a view
to debating a way forward and resolved to form Men of Zimbabwe Arise (MOZA).
They elected a representative who will sit in the WOZA leadership body,
called Mother WOZA, until a full
structure is able to be formed.

Other business included the formulation of an urban and rural plan of
action and a plan to intensify training on strategic non-violence.

Members of WOZA and MOZA would like to tell Zimbabweans that they have
committed and prepared themselves for a non-violent uprising of 'ordinary'
Zimbabweans who will do the extraordinary. Leaders said Mugabe and his
regime boast of having 'degrees in
violence', which has brought only hatred and destruction. WOZA has
'degrees in non-violence' that will result in love and reconstruction. When
you hear the slogans 'Woza Moya' and 'Umkhonto wo Thando' or 'Pfumo re Rudo'
and you see the Love Sign, you must
know that love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). We call our
resistance 'Tough Love' - it is the disciplining love of one Zimbabwean to
another. Our leaders have unleashed suffering upon us. We are on our knees.
It is the spirit of 'tough love' that will
help us to stand up and demand social justice and demand the Zimbabwe
we want - a Zimbabwe of hope and promise.

      On sports.
A netball final was held between Bulawayo and Harare under 28 and over
28. Bulawayo won both matches 8-4 and 11-1 respectively. The match was said
to represent a clashing of Bosso (Highlanders) and DeMbare (Dynamos).
Another victory for 'Bosso Ngenkani'!

Man charged with 'insulting' Mugabe

Washington Times
UPI

Aug. 16, 2006 at 7:47PM

A Zimbabwean man was charged Wednesday with undermining the authority of the
president after criticizing Robert Mugabe, a police spokesman said.
Tichaona Muchabaiwa, director of a fuel-supply firm, was arrested last
weekend at a police roadblock after allegedly making "insulting" remarks,
the state-owned Herald newspaper reports.
The charge follows a warning from Mugabe Tuesday that Zimbabwe's army
stood ready to "pull the trigger" against anyone seeking to topple him from
power.
Opposition leaders have called for street protests to end Mugabe's
long rule, which they say has reduced the country from one of the most
promising in Africa to an economic disaster.
Mugabe has led Zimbabwe since 1980, first as prime minister and then
as the country's first president.
Muchabaiwa could be sentenced to a prisoner term, community service or
a fine, the BBC reported.

Anti Union repression is back in Zimbabwe

      Thursday, 17 August 2006, 10:53 am
Press Release: International Confederation Of Free Trade Unions
International Confederation Of Free Trade Unions
Anti Union repression is back in Zimbabwe

Brussels, 16 August 2006 (ICFTU OnLine): The International Confederation
of Free Trade Unions condemns in the strongest possible terms the arrest
yesterday, 15 August 2006, of M. Wellington Chibebe, General Secretary
of its affiliated organisation, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions
(ZCTU). It has also reported the case to the International Labour Office
for appropriate action.

M. Chibebe was arrested at a roadblock and detained at Waterfalls Police
station as he was travelling by car from Masvingo with his family. He
was stopped at a roadblock near Waterfalls, where the Police demanded to
search his car, supposedly in order to look for cash. The Government is
currently campaigning to prevent currency speculation while it is
conducting a major monetary reform purportedly aiming at fighting
hyperinflation, which currently stands at over 1000%.

At first, Chibebe was accused of resisting a police search. According to
ZCTU legal sources, however, the police later deliberately changed the
charges to common assault against a police officer so as to make the
issue more serious, given his profile.

The ICFTU strongly condemns this arbitrary arrest, which is the latest
in a continuous pattern of harassment and repression of Zimbabwe's
independent trade union movement. In addition, it also deplores the
method s chosen by the government to address the country's financial
crisis, which victimises workers and other citizens by confiscating
their possessions instead of addressing the root causes of Zimbabwe's
dramatic economic situation. Such confiscations are of course illegal
and are in the process of being challenged in the courts.

In a letter to President Robert Mugabe,
http://www.icftu.org/displaydocument.asp?Index=991224921&Language=EN,
the ICFTU has called for an intervention by his Government in order to
secure the immediate and unconditional release of Wellington Chibebe and
the dropping of all charges against him. It also called on the
authorities to order an immediate cessation of repressive measures
against the ZCTU, its members, activists, leaders and sympathisers.

Meanwhile, the ICFTU has also written to the Director-General of the
UN's International Labour Organisation (ILO), asking him to intervene
personally with the Zimbabwe Government in order to secure Chibebe's
release.

As of today, 16hrs CET, Chibebe was still detained at Waterfalls Police
Station.

Here you will find an interview of Wellington Chibebe released by the
ICFTU in June 2006:

The ICFTU represents 155 million workers in 241 affiliated organisations
in 156 countries and territories: http://www.icftu.org ICFTU is also a

Zambia 'ready' to sell maize reserves to neighbours

      August 17, 2006.

      By ANDnetwork .com

Zambia's food reserve agency says it is ready to sell half of its
maize reserves (100 000 tons) to neighboring countries that have applied to
buy about 250 000 tons due to crop deficits.

Food Reserve Agency (FRA) managing director was cited by Wednesday's
Zambia Daily Mail as saying that five countries in the region, Angola, the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Namibia and Zimbabwe, have requested
to be supplied with 50 000 tons of maize.
However, the Zambian government has mandated the FRA to export only
100 000 tons of maize for fear of food shortage at home.

Agriculture officials have earlier predicted that Zambia would this
year record a 64.5% rise in maize output, which rises to 1 424 439 tons from
866 187 tons during the 2004/05 farming season.

In February this year, Zambian president Levy Mwanawasa banned any
exportation of maize and mealie meal in consideration of the country's food
demand. The ban was lifted later after the country predicted a bump harvest
this year.

Protect us and not criminals, failed Zim asylum seekers tell Blair

Zimbabwejournalists.com

      By a Correspondent

LONDON - Zimbabweans living in the UK yesterday took the British
government to task over its intentions to deport failed asylum seekers to
Zimbabwe while choosing to protect people with criminal cases before the
Zimbabwean courts and those dissenting from the army, police or
intelligence.

Speaking at the Home Office after spending the night demonstrating
outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London, Arthur Molife of the Coalition
Against Deportations and Forced Removals to Zimbabwe said:

"We are here because the Home Office is deporting and enforcing
removals to Zimbabwe of, and I'm sorry to say, black Zimbabweans. We are
here to protest against the policy they have started now after the decision
that was taken during the AIT judgement so this is a continuous
demonstration, we had a vigil last night, we are going to do these things
whenever possible, we are not going to let off."

"We find that there is a lot of hypocrisy between the Blair and Mugabe
governments - they equally do the same thing - we are surprised that
Zimbabwe has become safe for people to return when sanctions are still
imposed on Mugabe. If they are still imposed we therefore demand that the
Zimbabwe embassy here be closed and vice versa because the two embassies
serve no purpose and no people of Zimbabwe," he said in apparent reference
to the targeted sanctions imposed by the EU and its partners on the ruling
elite in Harare.

The protesters were asking the Home Office to reinstate the suspension
of all deportations of failed asylum seekers to Zimbabwe.

The decision not to deport Zimbabweans was overturned by the courts
after the Home Office successfully appealed that errors of law had been made
when the ruling was made by the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal (AIT). This
resulted in the case known as the AA being referred back to the AIT where
the British government was given the green light to resume deportations of
failed asylum seekers.

The Zimbabweans presented petitions at the Home Office, where they
were promised a response within the next two weeks, and at Tony Blair's
Office, 10 Downing Street. They also presented a separate petition to the
Zimbabwe Embassy calling for the closure of the embassy. No-one in the
embassy wanted to accept the petition and the protesters had to leave it
with security guards.

Setting out other two further risk categories for the new country
guidelines for immigration authorities dealing with Zimbabwean asylum
cases -  those with a military background and those with outstanding and
unresolved criminal issues in Zimbabwe - AIT's Judge Hodge said asylum cases
should be considered on their own merit when he made the ruling a few weeks
ago.

He said also to be protected from deportation were known opposition
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) activists and teachers "with an actual
or perceived political profile of support for the MDC".

Molife said law-abiding people Zimbabweans deserved to be protected by
the British government. He said forcing people to return was inhuman.

"We are not pleased that Britain has decided to accept army, police
and CIOs who abscond from the Zimbabwe forces, including the criminals,
rapists and so on, are being given sanctuary here yet innocent people who
are the victims of these people are being sent back to Zimbabwe," he said.

Nobel Sibanda said his organisation is seeking a reprieve from the
British authorities so genuine and law-abiding Zimbabweans are allowed to
stay until the situation back home improved.

Many failed asylum seekers attended the vigil and two demonstrations
yesterday. They chanted slogans and held placards denouncing the decision to
deport the Zimbabweans.

Mercy Munyaradzi, the coalition's secretary, said the Zimbabwean
community would continue to target British lawmakers with more protests
planned at opposition Tory party headquarters soon to bring them up to speed
with the plight of the failed asylum seekers here in the UK.

The petitions pointed out Zimbabwe was unsafe to return failed asylum
seekers for now.

Patricia Mukandara, a failed asylum seeker who was once detained for
more than three months by the British authorities, said it was sad that
thousands of Zimbabweans risked being sent back home despite the worsening
situation in Zimbabwe.

"All of us who came here and sought political asylum are regarded as
traitors and sell-outs by the government of Zimbabwe so we cannot risk being
sent back home," she said.

"We should not be sent back home for as long as Mugabe is in power. We
ran away from persecution so what has changed. We will not hesitate to go
back to Zimbabwe once the situation on the ground improves so we are
appealing to the authorities to hear our cries. Since the day the ruling was
made, we are having nightmares, sleepless nights fearing we may be picked up
anytime."

Another protester, Owen Muganda, said the British government should
explain to the world why it is accepting criminals from Zimbabwe and giving
them sanctuary while sending back genuine asylum seekers.

He said the failed asylum seekers from Zimbabwe felt they were being
used as political pawns in the British immigration numbers game.

"We are not safe to return to Zimbabwe because we are under threat. We
will continue to demonstrate and ask the British government to continue to
look deeply into the plight of failed asylum seekers from Zimbabwe," said
Muganda.

Organisations representing Zimbabweans in the UK and the failed asylum
seekers are making efforts to see how best to respond to the recent ruling
allowing deportations to resume. The Refugee Legal Council has been poring
over the ruling to see if it can appeal citing errors of law while more
demonstrations are in the pipeline to highlight the plight of the failed
asylum seekers.

MDC slams financial failure

The Zimbabwean

HARARE - The MDC secretary for economic affairs has lashed out at the
government over its inability to respect "basic economic principles", and
accused the ruling party of indulging in a "game of fantasy economics".
Mfandaidza Hove said the latest monetary policy statement was not a cause
for celebration. "Since its launch, prices of goods and services have
resumed their upward spiral in response to the 150% devaluation in the
Zimbabwe dollar against the United States dollar," he said. He added that
the currency conversion was "punitive" and would hurt the ordinary "person
on the street". He expressed his concern that people who did not have bank
accounts would have serious difficulties in trying to convert their money to
the new currency.
"Slashing zeros does not make anyone a hero," said Hove, adding that large
amounts of private money were being confiscated "allegedly without any
receipts given in some cases."
"An economy that forces its people to such extremely difficult choices has
no right to boast of heroes in its midst.  Zimbabwe is a pariah state and
will continue to be until there is restoration of political legitimacy and
the introduction of sound macro-economic policies," said Hove.
He said it was commonly accepted that that the major causes of the economic
decline included the lack of investment, the country's inability to generate
foreign exchange, international isolation and a very unfriendly investor
climate.
"Until these issues are tackled, none of the measures announced by both the
Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Reserve Bank will arrest the
crisis in the economy.  Zanu (PF) has lost the political will to resolve the
economic problems of this country.  Sadly, they do not have the decency to
admit failure," he said. - KJW

Zims agree on Home Office meeting

The Zimbabwean

LONDON - In a show of unity, Zimbabweans representing various groups met
here on Friday and agreed on a delegation to discuss the asylum situation
with the Home Office. Representatives of the Vigil, the Zimbabwe
Association, the Zimbabwe Action Group, the Zimbabwe Community Association,
Free-Zim Youth and both factions of the MDC attended.
Harris Nyatsanza, who initiated the project, was chosen to be part of the
three-person delegation to the Home Office, together with Ephraim Tapa,
chair of the MDC Central London Branch, and Yvonne Mahlunge, a well-known
lawyer.  Another lawyer, Julius Mutyambizi-Dewa of the Vigil would assist
and two others, Lucia Dube of the Zimbabwe Community Association and Faith
Nyamuti of MDC, were chosen as reserves in case the Home Office objected to
any of the delegates.
Fazil Kawani of the Refugee Council will facilitate the Home Office meeting,
as he did with a similar approach on behalf of Zimbabweans last year.  He
said the Home Office must be made to understand that the situation in
Zimbabwe continues to worsen.
The meeting felt that the main focus should be on protecting people who were
in fear of their lives should they be forced home.  Others, who had perhaps
only become politically active in exile, should be strongly supported.  Some
asylum seekers, whose cases had been badly represented by dodgy lawyers must
be allowed new hearings.  While there was general sympathy for Zimbabwean
economic migrants, there was criticism that too few of them had been active
in the struggle on behalf of their more unfortunate compatriots back home.
Mahlunge said the asylum system had been abused, and the Zimbabwean protest
movement in the UK did not have the necessary critical mass to influence
government decisions: not enough people, for instance, attended the Vigil.
It was also pointed out from the floor that the Home Office knows that many
Zimbabweans come and go to Zimbabwe.  It was essential to be honest. A ban
on sending back Zimbabweans should not include supporters of Zanu (PF) and
other nationals pretending to be Zimbabweans.  It was suggested that the
delegation should offer to help the Home Office in weeding out bogus asylum
claims. - Own correspondent

Partying for a cause

The Zimbabwean

BY KJW
LONDON - For many diasporans living in London, Zimfest has become as
synonymous with the British summer as strawberries and cream at the
Wimbledon tennis tournament and train saunas accompanying the month long
heatwave. From as early as April, Zimbabweans meeting up in pubs, at
protests and on the tube will be asking that all important question: "Hey,
do you know when Zimfest is this year?"
WEZIMBABWE organisers have promised veteran party goers that this year's
festival will be bigger and better than ever before. The date has been
announced, the bands lined up and people are looking forward to drinking
castle lager, meeting up with long lost friends and stocking up on cream
soda, niknaks and sadza. However, as we gear up for a fun day of nostalgia
and reminiscing it is important to remember that Zimfest is about so much
more than just munching on boerwors rolls and koeksisters.
In 2001 as the situation in Zimbabwe deteriorated, a group of young
Zimbabwean immigrants met in London to discuss raising money for charitable
causes back home. Out of these meetings WEZIMBABWE and the concept of
Zimfest were born; with so many of us flooding into the UK why not help
people by throwing an annual party? To date over £80 000 has been
distributed to charity in Zimbabwe: from education projects for children in
Harare to orphanage and feeding projects in Matabeleland and Manicaland.
Philip Chikwiramakomo, the Zimfest Project Manager, says that it is not just
about raising money but also a chance to "showcase and celebrate all that is
good about Zimbabwe."
He says that this includes getting established artists such as Mann Friday,
Netsayi and Henry Olonga to perform as well as giving opportunities to
"unheralded artists" such as Bush Guru and Thabani. "We will also be having
a dance and music workshop tent where people will be able, not only to
listen to some music from the main stage, but there will also be an
opportunity to play and learn a few tricks on Zimbabwean instruments," he
said.
Mann Friday, the only Zimbabwean rock group in London, has been playing at
the festival since it began. "Zimfest is a great day out for us," says band
member Ryan Koriya. "It gives us a chance to chill with our friends and play
to the home crowd as well as being one of our bigger audiences."
Chikwiramakomo feels that one of the most important aspects of Zimfest, is
that it brings together Zimbabweans in the UK from all walks of life,
enabling us to build networks. "Our organisation's aims are to build a sense
of community and togetherness hoping it will translate into dignity, unity
and respect for the Zimbabwean people," he said.
Over the past five years, thousands of our fellow Zimbabweans have been
subject to state sanctioned torture and harassment, hundreds of thousands
have been made homeless by Operation Murambatsvina and with the economy in
decline and people unable to access food and basic healthcare, an
unprecedented number of children have been orphaned through the scourge of
AIDS.
In a recent inspirational talk to Zimbabweans in the UK, funded by
WEZIMBABWE, Debbie Jeans urged diasporans not to forget their "Zimbabwean
DNA". Zimfest has become a day where we can meet up to celebrate where we
come from, as well as remembering and helping those we have left behind.

Mugabe rages over 'New Look' Zanu doc

The Zimbabwean

BY GIFT PHIRI
HARARE - A rejuvenation discussion document presented at Zanu (PF)'s
politburo meeting last week called for "fundamental changes" to the party's
ideology and leadership to stem voter decline and ensure the ruling party's
survival.
The document has angered President Mugabe to such an extent that he has
recalled all copies after the meeting and ordered that members of his
Soviet-style politburo do not consider it or leak it to the media.
This is despite the fact that the author of the document, justice minister
Patrick Chinamasa, was requested by the party's leadership to write and
present a discussion paper on the party's rejuvenation in the face of
growing anger against the regime.
"It is brutally honest," said a politburo member speaking on condition of
anonymity. "It opened a few eyes to the fact that you can't change if you
want to keep on doing the same thing."
Several politburo members who have read the document provided a detailed
summary of the two-part document. The first part addresses "the party's
image problem and resultant voter loss." It gives a meticulous historical
account of the party from its formation in Highfields in 1964 to the
present.
"The paper notes that at some point the party began to make strategic
mistakes because it misread the evolving politics of the late 90s," said a
politburo member.
The paper asks, for example, whether it was correct for the party not to
have joined forces with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change in
2003 during inter-party talks.
The second part of the document is what raised Mugabe's ire, said politburo
members. The document suggests that the party is perceived as a "personality
cult" and asks questions about whether it is appropriate that Zanu (PF)
leaders are "more popular than the party."
It also questions the tribal balancing act in the presidium and the narrow
zezuru ethnicism of the party, which have contributed to the party's
declining support since 2000.
The document suggests that the ruling party should "reposition to connect
with wider constituencies and move away from regionalism that has come to
characterize Zanu (PF)".
It notes that the party needs to manufacture a new image "that connects with
the people," insinuating that it has lost touch with the needs of its
voters. The paper states that the ideological stance should shift from its
narrow ethnic base and adopt social democratic principles.
Party spokesman Nathan Shamuyarira confirmed that Zanu (PF) was working on
plans to update its socialist ideology. "We are going to produce an updated
ideology for the party, we have had the ideology of socialism, but it needs
to be updated in line with the changing times."

Agreement on mass action

The Zimbabwean

HARARE - Opposition and civic groups have all agreed to adopt the Zimbabwe
Democracy Charter, an explosive document spelling out a roadmap for all
democratic forces to unite and stage a people's revolt against President
Robert Mugabe.
Political analysts hailed the unified response by all the various bodies,
saying this was a vital landmark in the battle against the economic and
social collapse caused by Mugabe's misrule.
More than 50 civic society groups including churches, student bodies, labour
and all opposition political parties had thrown their full weight behind the
Charter, said Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition CEO Jacob Mafume.
"It is a framework for the post-Mugabe society that we want in Zimbabwe," he
said.
The unified response to the charter was hailed by the main MDC as "a
contract between the democratic forces and the people of Zimbabwe".
"This will usher in the post-Mugabe era. It expresses what we stand for and
not just what we are against," said Nelson Chamisa, the party's spokesman.
The charter outlines the setting up of a transitional authority with a
mandate to oversee Mugabe's departure from power and the writing of a new
constitution, followed by fresh elections supervised by the international
community.
If Mugabe rejects these conditions, he will face a popular revolt.
"It is an inspirational document giving a vision for the future and an
expression of the values that must inform a new Zimbabwe," Mafume said.
The charter compels any post-Mugabe government to strive for equality and
food security, to guard against plunder by the ruling elite and to restore
the dignity of workers through the payment of fair wages.
It also demands respect for diversity, collective decision-making,
zero-tolerance to corruption, decentralization of power and the holding of
regular, free and fair elections that comply with international and regional
standards.
The repeal of repressive security and press laws and other pieces of
legislation prejudicial to freedom of speech, the press, movement and
association are also recommended.  - Own correspondent

Will they have the guts?

The Zimbabwean

Elsewhere in this newspaper we carry a story about Mugabe throwing his toys
because of a very frank self-assessment document on Zanu (PF) put together
at the request of the politburo by justice minister Patrick Chinamasa.
We understand that the document is very candid and clearly identifies a
number of problems within Zanu that are common knowledge, such as the
ascendancy of all those related to the Zezuru clan - to the increasing
consternation of other Shona-speakers, the marginalisation of the Ndebeles
and the personality cult surrounding certain individuals - notably the
president himself and Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono.
According to inside sources, the report also highlights the strategic
mistakes make by Zanu (PF) during the 90s, particularly the misreading of
the political temperature in the country and the missed opportunity of
negotiations with the MDC.
We, among many other commentators and new sources, have articulated all
these problems in the past. They have fallen on deaf ears. Now that the
criticism comes from within his own party, Mugabe has flown into a rage -
demanding that all copies of the report be withdrawn from circulation and
returned to him.
Herein lies the fundamental problem.  We had long suspected that Mugabe was
being ill-informed by his lieutenants. "Living in cloud cuckooland" was the
oft-repeated phrase. Now we know it is all true. His reaction to being told
the truth at last makes their initial reluctance somewhat understandable. I
suppose we should applaud them for biting the bullet at long last.
Until now Mugabe, one man, has decreed truth for everyone else. His opinion
alone has become the party line and everyone else has toed it - in order to
protect their ill-gotten gains of course.  But now the chips are really
down. Cloud cuckoo-land is not cutting it any more. Hence the "bravery" of
the many senior politicians who rushed to leak the story of the report.
Mugabe's policy of smashing the mirror because he doesn't like his
reflection has not improved his image. Refusing to accept the facts doesn't
change anything. The question now is whether those surrounding him will be
able to summon the guts to force the old dodderer to face reality. We live
in hope.
Word for Today : "Now listen you rich people, weep and wail because of the
misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten
your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will
testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in
the last days . the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the
Lord Almighty." - James 5 Vs 1-4

Graffiti plasters official Heroes' Day route

The Zimbabwean

'From Hero to Zero'
BY OWN CORRESPONDENT
HARARE - Authorities battled to erase giant anti-Mugabe messages emblazoned
on huge boulders along the Harare/Bulawayo road on Monday where President
Robert Mugabe's convoy later swept past en route to the Heroes Acre for the
official proceedings.
A platoon of government's shock troops, commonly known as green bombers,
could be seen using thinners to scrub one such message inscribed on the
plaque of an electricity sub station along the highway early Monday morning.
The plaque read: "Mugabe Zvakwana Chienda! (Mugabe we have suffered enough.
Go now!)" while others on nearby rock read: "Zanu (PF) Zvakwana. Enough is
enough" and "Mugabe - From Hero to Zero."
Overwhelmed by the number of the giant graffiti messages, most of which were
inscribed on building, durawalls and billboards, the green bombers resorted
to blanking them out using placards bearing pro-government messages.
Scores of vegetable vendors who were force-marched by the Zanu (PF) youths
from Mbare Musika to the Heroes Acre to listen to Mugabe were lined up along
the highway with placards praising the 82-year-old leader.
In a speech full of hardline rhetoric and aggressive anti-Western
sentiments, President Mugabe fired a broadside at millions of Zimbabweans
fleeing his misrule and taking sanctuary in the North Atlantic bloc.
"Iwe unotendeuka uchitiratidza gotsi zuva ranhasi, pako ndepapi? Iwe mutema
anomhanya, hezvo semumvana wenguruve. Kutiza nyika yako wakananga uko
Ngirandi.
Unozivikanwa nani ikoko? Kunova muranda kune nyika yevamwe! Hezvo mava
kutinhwa semombe wani kuti dzokerai kwenyu. Munofanira kuyeuka kuti zuva
ranhasi rakakupai nyika yamuri kuramba," Mugabe said in apparent reference

to the forced deportation of hundreds of failed Zimbabwean asylum seekers by
the British government.
A spokesman of the main wing of the opposition Movement for Democratic
Change (MDC) said Mugabe's "ignorance and arrogance" about the issues
affecting the country was "encyclopaedic."
"Mugabe is the foremost reason why we have this brain drain," said MDC
spokesman Nelson Chamisa. "Mugabe is the author of the exodus. It's an
insult for him to start attacking and denigrating them."
Chamisa said many Zimbabweans had little to celebrate as they marked Heroes
Day - the annual remembrance of the liberation from white rule in 1980.
despicable underhand dealings which only worsen the agony of our people and
further delay our economic policy reforms," Mugabe said, adding that
knocking off three zeros from the country's currency was just the beginning
of a revolution that will strengthen the country's tattered currency.
In pointed remarks targeted at Botswana, Mugabe lashed out at "neighbouring
countries" that have spoken out against Zimbabwe's state-driven economic
collapse.
"We hear useless characters condemning us from neighbouring coutries, vamwe
vasingagoni kana kurima (some of who can't even farm)," Mugabe said in
thinly veiled attack on Botswana, which Harare often accuses of being a pawn
for the US.
But Chamisa said it was typical for "dictators" to be hostile to divergent
views.
"The attack on Botswana defies international logic," Chamisa said. "It is
typical of all dictators to choose to listen to their own voices and
assemble constituencies of praise singers and bootlickers. He is not happy
with those who are in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe. Mugabe is
trying to assassinate progressive voices of reason."
Mugabe demanded that his political opponents repent before they can expect
to hold talks with the government on tackling the country's deepening
crisis.
Pro-senate MDC secretary-general Welshman Ncube said Mugabe was the one who
should seek forgiveness for the deaths of 3,000 opposition supporters.
Mugabe admitted failure of his agrarian reform saying government now wanted
to repossess land allocated to new black farmers who had shown that they had
little or no aptitude for farming.

Holland takes charge of Harare

The Zimbabwean

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT
HARARE - The Movement for Democratic Change has re-organised its party
revitalisation programme by appointing National Executive Committee (NEC)
Members to be responsible for each of the 12 provinces in Zimbabwe. Party
sources say the programme, which was initiated soon after the party's
Congress, has been a huge success in the rural areas.
Sources close to the latest developments say the new strategy of placing
members in provinces they do not originate from is meant to expose the
leadership to other  areas  they may not be familiar  with and  to develop a
national profile of the MDC  leadership.
Professor Mukonoweshuro is now responsible for Mashonaland East and Dr
Mufandaedza Hove goes to Manicaland, while Kwekwe medical practitioner Dr
Madzorera takes over Midlands South, and Gweru Mayor Sesel Zvidzai takes
over midlands North. Media guru, Sipepa Nkomo who is from Tsholotsho has
been placed in Matebeland South, while Seiso Moyo of Beitbridge supervises
Bulawayo.
Deputy appointments include among others, journalist Grace Kwinjeh who
remains in Manicaland with Lawyer Jessie Majome going to Mashonaland
Central, while former UZ Chancellor Professor Gordon Chavhunduka is deputy
for Harare province.
A real scoop for MDC women is the appointment of media trainer and war
veteran, Sekai Holland who takes charge of Harare Province. This is
considered the eye of the storm, in the event that the party launches its
non-violent peaceful Democratic Resistance Campaign for change.
Sources say Holland has started work to re-energise this once vibrant MDC
tronghold. She has already invited key people to chair strategic committees
dealing with issues such as business, religion, sports, youth and women.

The Zimbabwean Letters 17-08-06

Gono successfully derails mass action
EDITOR - The simple truth is that Mugabe is substantially if not wholly
responsible for the economic and political mess in which every Zimbabwean
finds himself in today. He has really worked extra hard to destroy one of
Africa's once most vibrant and most promising economies. Today Zimbabwe
qualifies to be listed in the group of the failed states - what a shame!
But what is Gono's role in the economic management of the practically
bankrupt but very beautiful country called Zimbabwe. Is he a Messiah or a
Devil? I, for one, having followed closely the events in my beloved but
troubled country for years now, firmly believe that Gono is being used by
Mugabe to foil and kill people's resolve to fight for their freedom.
For almost four years now, Gono has come up with short-sighted, half baked,
incomprehensible and to a large extent unworkable economic policies.  It
boggles the mind to realise that someone who presumably has done Economics
at university and a man who is in the position of the Reserve Bank of a
republic gets the basics of xconomics wrong every time, yet he continues to
enjoy the best of protection from the country's president.
How on earth can a man of Gono's calibre blame the economic woes bedevilling
the country on the suffering masses that he accuses of "hoarding cash?" Even
a street kid roaming the streets of Harare knows pretty well that industries
are folding daily due to the non-availability of forex in the country, which
is a direct result of the government's unsustainable and imaginary economic
policies. The multi-trillion Zim dollar question here is, Is this failure
(by Gono) to address the really causes of the crisis by faulty or it by is
by design?
To me this is purely by design and Gono does this to prevent people from
confronting their number one enemy - Mugabe and his Zanu (PF),of which Gono
is part. This has really worked for Zanu (PF) so far.
Many people have been working towards mass protests to demonstrate against
the repression of Mugabe's despotic regime. Gono has successfully derailed
this by announcing that the country's money would be changed in three weeks.
It is not difficult to understand why no effort was made to educate the
population about the new notes. It was to ambush people, get them unaware so
as to shift their attention from the struggle and destroy the gathered
momentum as everyone now concentrates on trying to protect their valueless
millions before the August 21 deadline.
Where on earth have you ever heard the money of a country changed in a space
of only three weeks with no prior publicity at all? Shame on you Gono!
ECONOMIC REFUGEE, Mozambique

Delay not a problem
EDITOR - The delay in mass action is not a crisis, although some are
starting to loose patience with our leader Mr Tsvangirai. I think a delay is
good because people still need to be taught the reason behind the mass
action, especially in the rural areas. These are the people who are still
deceived by Mugabe and believe that the economic collapse is because of
British sabotage.
They are now learning that the way you raise money is by robbing civilians
of their Z$14 trillion in order to finance the Green bombers and the army.
The mass will take action because of fear. The fear that we have is for the
future of our children, who will live in the country without any mineral
resources as these are all being given to the Chinese.
MANFRED, CapeTown

Trillion dollar question
EDITOR - Let us all be awakened to the grave realities of the false and
tragic theatrics of our Governor Dr Gono on the collapsed economy. Previous
RBZ Governors stuck to their traditional terms of references and quietly
worked out things based on the economic realities. Both Dr Moyana and Dr
Tsumba advised the government that the economy of Zimbabwe (since the
creation of the modern economy in the 1890s) is based on the soils,
agriculture and mining.
Gono's acquiring of extra powers of even seeking the services of the
unpopular, corrupt and counterproductive Green Bombers is tragically
astonishing.
The trillion dollar question (after removing a zero or two) is why not use
the energies of the CIO Army, Green Bombers, etc to restore the agriculture
and mining fortunes? After all, are these not the very same terror
institutions (with the help from Dr Made's Ministry and Prof Moyo) that
actively destroyed and wiped out the once prosperous agricultural and mining
activities in Zimbabwe?
DENFORD MOYO, UK

Do not despair
EDITOR - The various reports of people being beaten up, detained in cells
and systematically tortured by soldiers, police and CIO agents as punishment
for backing the opposition party and expressing alternate views and opinions
are deeply disturbing.
It's saddening to note that over the past decade Zimbabweans have lost most
of the rights for which the liberation struggle was fought. My heart goes to
all those defenceless citizens who have been victims of various forms of
political violence. I would like to reassure the long-suffering Zimbabweans
that the brutal repression will soon inevitably come to an end. History
tells us no dictatorship has lasted forever. Ruling out majority rule Ian
Smith once declared "Not in my life time". It's 26 years  since we got
independence and he is still alive.  I call upon all oppressed Zimbabweans
not to despair in these hard times. They say its darkest before dawn .The
writing is on the wall. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow Zimbabwe will
soon be free from this oppressive black minority regime ruling under the
guise of black majority.
I appeal to the victims and witnesses of violence and torture to keep and
preserve any pieces of evidence that could be used to convict and punish
those responsible when Zimbabwe is free. In the courts of justice evidence
will be crucial in convicting those torturing and violating peoples' rights
with impunity.
C CHINOMUNHIA, Ponders End, UK

Protecting life and property
EDITOR - Mr. Mohadi has said: "The mandate of the Police is to protect life
and property. We cannot be found wanting in our mandate to protect any
citizen including the Governor."
This is wonderful stuff from the Minister of Home Affairs. Here are a few
further pointers for the fine gentleman.
. In Matabeleland about 20 000 civilians were murdered in the 80s by the
current Air Marshall Perence Shiri.
. In the last year Gideon Gono has printed trillions, there by stealing the
people's pensions and savings.
. In April 2000 David Stephens was abducted from a Police station and shot
in cold blood by "war veterans."
. In April 2000 Martin Olds was surrounded by "war veterans" and murdered
whilst the Police at Nyamandlovu declined to protect him at all.
. In the last six years there have been wholesale evictions of farmers, and
looting of equipment - in some instances by Mr. Mohadi's fellow cabinet
ministers - as the landowners were deemed to be evil because they were
white, or because they might not support wholesale Zanu murder and looting
as per the last 26 years.
Fortunately for Mr. Mohadi, and his Zanu Republic Police, there will be no
transport or fuel problems to apprehend their offenders because they are
actually all Zanu - most conveniently, it will a be a totally in-house Zanu
operation.
The present situation in the country is hardly surprising - no matter how
much the likes of Eric Bloch choose to defend the Governor's policy of
stealing pension funds by printing money. The people of Zimbabwe are very
wise to by pass the Zanu (criminally run) Reserve Banking system, that funds
the monster that is killing them - Zanu itself  - and have chosen to run
their own fiscal system - the informal sector.
All of us (including the Americans) must be mindful of the fact that the
Arabs are now putting their faith in the EU monetary system rather than the
US one. The Arabs, like the Zimbabweans worry about feeding a beast that has
now turned on them and their families. Can we really blame them?
We must remember that "he who sows inequity shall reap calamity."
Zanu is now reaping where it sowed. Is Eric Bloch now attempting to nurture
Zanu's crop of calamity? I fear so. New seed might well be a better option.

Appealing for help
EDITOR - I am appealing to individuals and organisations that can assist me
complete my studies at the UZ. I will be entering into my fourth and final
year of my BSc (HONS) degree in Electrical Engineering, but I am having
difficulties in raising the required fees. As outlined in The Sunday Mail of
August 6 the total fees required this coming semester is Z$47 000, and is
proving difficult for me to find as I owe the University $13 000 from last
semester.
Those willing to assist can get in touch with me on:

NORMAN, Harare

Verses of Fury
Voices wrangle violently from one lonely corner to another like  a thrown
sharp  object from a custard metal box. Voices return to original places,
hastily and miserably. The same voices are submerged and prompt deep
thoughts, fuelling and lubricating the brain, otherwise corrosive if allowed
to remain idle.
Faces that I see, to those that I go and those that come me, oiled with
sheer rage. Destroyed faces deployed into this miserable world. My Zimbabwe.
By merely looking, thoughts, conclusions and a battalion of questions sail
through one's mind. I was brought unwillingly into this harsh, cancerous
Zimworld which taught me how Zimlife fails man. But upon naked examination,
I feel and still sit comfortably in the auditorium of this gospel. ZimLife
fails no man.
Contaminated and contained rage, is too dangerous if allowed to overflow and
results are always streams and lakes of blood, flooding human blood that
comes with it huge loads in skeleton forms depositing what was once defined
as "human" to the mouth of barbarism. The professor, using his small, high
magnifying lenses, bores his naked iris on the remains while the pauper eyes
him back.
The writer scribbles squabbles with sheer, utter amazement and joy for the
dollars that may be. Whose reputation is sacrificed while the analysis of
what could have been avoided boils in one's heart and the results are always
acidic actions towards the remains.
I would have wanted to pity and feel remorse towards mothers and their
unborn who die in labour and are piled in cold rooms - supposed to be
mortuary. I must pity lucky infants shrivelled with rage, as hunger and
malnutrition tolls - to remorse towards a few babies who live to tell the
painful experience.
You expect me to be proud of my nation, to be proud of my skin? Mine, even
yours has become nothing but verses, verses of fury that burn nakedly in our
everyday Zimbabwe. It never rains, but pours verses of fury in the streets,
hungry walls even billionaires too fume over the dropping of the precious
zeroes. Wither shall all end?

Accommodation for ex farmers offered.
I am due to go overseas at the end of August to work for 3 and half months.

granny flat in Kensington, attached to main house, with beautiful garden.
Has a main bedroom and a small spare bedroom, nice kitchen and bathroom and
main room = lounge/dining room. Hallway guest loo can also be used. Fully

6.4 Home Wanted (Ad inserted 25/07/06)

PLEASE can you give a good home to two lovely mature dogs.  They are very
good companions and it would be wonderful if they could go to the same home.
Unfortunately a home with other animals would not be suitable.

LOBUS: is a beautiful Boerbull cross Mastiff. He is about 7/8 years old. He
has been to "school", and responds very well to commands. He has a very nice
nature, is not aggressive and responds to lots of love and attention.  He is
not very good with other animals, and cats are a definite no no.  However
his best friend is:

LADY: is the sweetest little tan Staffy.  She has the most wonderful nature,
talks to you and just wants to be loved all the time.  She is about 4 years
old and not very big.

The two together, work as a very good team with regard to security.  Lady is
the ears and Lobus is the muscle.

tiny premises. Because of his fear I would prefer a home with NO CHILDREN.
