Source: 30 000 would-be voters turned away – NewsDay Zimbabwe October 31, 2017
THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has confirmed that it had turned away nearly 30 000 potential registrants in the just-ended first phase of the biometric voter registration (BVR) blitz mainly due to lack of requisite documents.
In a statement yesterday, Zec said a total of 1,2 million of the targeted seven million potential voters had successfully registered so far.
“A total of 1 240 459 voters were registered during the first phase of the BVR exercise launched on October 10, 2017 and completed on October 25, 2017. A total of 28 515 potential registrants were recorded as turned away for a variety of reasons which included, production of wrong documents such as the driver’s licence, being under age, failure to produce proof of residenceand presentation of defaced documents,” Zec said.
Zec said the first phase of the BVR blitz targeted flood-prone areas ahead of the forthcoming rainy season.
