FORMER ZBC News Editor-in-Chief, Chris Chivinge, has bounced back as Head News and Current Affairs in a reshuffle of the top management ranks at the public broadcaster.
Chivinge takes over from Tarzen Mandizvidza who had been General Manger News and Current Affairs since 2005 but now moves to production and television services. Josephine Zulu will head Radio Services.
Chivinge was appointed business development manager in 2011 following a stint in Namibia where he was attached at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation before returning to Pockets Hill as head radio services.
A statement released by head of communications Gladman Bandama said the changes were meant to create synergies and improve programming.
“The re-assignments come against challenges that have faced the Corporation and the need to continue exploring means and ways to improve programming,” Bandama said.
“The reassignments are therefore aimed at creating synergies and opportunities for improving all aspects of the operations of the Corporation.”
Bandama added that the reshuffle was aimed at addressing areas management expects to be highlighted by an ongoing audit ordered by the government.
“While the audit is continuing, you don’t sit around when there are performance issues which need to be addressed, what we can resolve with the information we have. The forensic audit will only help to inform a permanent decision.”
The national broadcaster has been losing viewership to foreign stations due to poor programmes and alleged pro-Zanu PF propaganda.
Information Minister, Jonathan Moyo, recently lambasted ZBC for producing poor quality content adding the broadcaster should have been shut down for failing Zimbabweans. Zanu PF chairperson, Simon Moyo, also weighed in, accusing the corporation of basing its reports on rumour.
Currently, the institution has 46 managers who are reportedly duplicating each other’s duties and taking home huge salaries while general workers at the bankrupt corporation suffer.
Mandizvidza is also reported to be taking home more than US$26,000, in addition to allegedly benefiting from a multimillion housing scandal that has sucked in suspended chief executive, Happison Muchechetere.
