HARARE – Zimbabwe’s former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president on Wednesday or Thursday, Zanu-PF legal secretary Patrick Chinamasa told Reuters after the resignation of Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe tendered his resignation on Tuesday afternoon as MPs started impeachment proceedings against him.

Separately, Zanu-PF chief whip Lovemore Matuke told Reuters that Mnangagwa would be sworn in within 48 hours and that he would serve the remainder of Mugabe’s term until the next general elections, which must be held by September 2018.

Mnangagwa fled Zimbabwe after he was fired by Mugabe earlier this month, saying he feared for his life.

Zanu-PF named Mnangagwa as the new party leader on Sunday after it expelled Mugabe and the first lady. However, Mugabe failed to resign on Sunday as was widely expected.

Known as “Ngwena” (The Crocodile), many have expressed fears the ruthless Mnangagwa, a veteran freedom fighter, might not be the ideal successor.
