via $1,28m for law realignment – NewsDay Zimbabwe March 13, 2015
THE European Union (EU) has released $1,28 million to a local organisation, Centre for Applied Legal Research (CALR), for onward transmission to various government departments involved in the realignment of the country’s laws in accordance with the new constitution.
In a statement yesterday, the EU said the money was meant for speeding up the process and providing technical support to officials involved in the project.
“With this financial assistance, the European Union aims at enhancing the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to perform its coordinating role in the constitutional legislative alignment process and its overarching mandate to implement the constitution,” the EU said.
“In addition the support also seeks to enhance the capacity of other government ministries to review laws and policies under their administration for compliance with the constitution.”
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Virginia Mabhiza, said the financial assistance would go a long way in facilitating the realignment process.
She also revealed that another high level inter-ministerial committee was being set up to monitor the project to ensure its speedy completion.
Attorney-General Prince Machaya bemoaned the slow pace at which the realignment process was going on saying the delay had affected operations at his office.
