National police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said 57 fatalities were recorded during the same period last year.

Nyathi said police this week issued 8 377 tickets for various traffic offences, down from 10 805 tickets issued last year.

“Of late, police have recorded cases of motorists speeding, where they end up losing control and killing pedestrians trying to cross roads or standing at bus stops,” he said, adding the heavy police presence on major highways had helped in curtailing more road carnage.
