PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe yesterday saw off a group of 25 young Zimbabweans set to undergo diamond cutting and polishing training in China.

This follows the signing of a bilateral agreement between China and the Zimbabwe School of Mines, which will see 150 Zimbabweans going to the Asian country in batches of 50 per year over the next three years.

Addressing the students at State House, Mugabe said the programme would enable the country to add value to its diamonds.

“We have ZimAsset, which emphasises on value addition. We want to get to the stage, where we can work out our diamonds, not exporting them raw,” he said.

Zimbabwe only has one diamond polishing centre, the privately-owned Zimbabwe Diamond Technology Centre, run by Lovemore Kurotwi, although government is not keen on using its facilities.
