Bloch passes on

via Bloch passes on | The Zimbabwean. 21 September 2014

Eric Bloch, one of Zimbabwe’s leading economists, has passed away.

Reports indicate that he passed away on Friday after battling with illness for close to a year.

During this time, Bloch, who was based in Bulawayo, was on bed rest.

In interviews with him over time, he complained that he was taking too long to recuperate but hoped that he would recover soon.

When The Zimbabwean called him recently, he complained of backache, adding that he was on medication.

It could not be immediately established what ailment he was suffering from.

Bloch, a chartered accountant by profession, was a respected economic analyst and was at one time an advisor to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).

His wife, Baileh, passed away in 2011.

RIP Eric. We will miss your incisive commentary on Zimbabwe’s economic woes. Such a pity you left Byo still in its very sorry state. The battle to bring sanity to Zimbabwe will be the poorer without you.

A sad loss for Bulawayo and Zimbabwe in the passing of Mr. Bloch.

“We are only as strong as our strongest men and we are only as great as our great men”, and this loss diminshies us.

Just a suggestion. Could the Bulawayo City Council not look into naming some City landmark after him? Perhaps the Revenue Hall gardens could be named after him and I’m sure some Companys would gladly pay for its upkeep?

As the nation read Block’s articles since Indipendence, dispair and despondency set upon us all. Block tried very hard to convince us all that the country would never be good for its people unless white rule and power was restored. I am sure more than 34 years of reality have finally taken toll on one of the biggest Rhodesian dreamers that ever lived. He will, I am sure, soon be joined by his fellow dreamers who are carrying on the futile fight.

Have you vaguely considered that possibly he was correct in his assumptions. ZANU could not spell economics never mind grasp even the most basic concepts. His insight will be missed.

Very sad news indeed. I had the privilege of serving with him on a local, only one of the many he served on. He had the courage to speak his truth about what the failings of the current government. I always looked forward to his inciteful weekly column. R.I.P.
