HARARE – New Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) leader Mandi Chimene  is claiming to have received death threats.

Chimene, who took over the reins from deposed Christopher Mutsvangwa, was seemingly upset by the reported development, and told a news conference on Tuesday that she had formally reported the matter to the police.

“We want you to know we have received threats, they said I am talkative so I must be silenced and I know that the only way to silence a person is to kill him,” she said.

The combative Chimene said she was not afraid.

“Ndinonzi Chimene ini ndiri mwana wekwaMakoni, ini ndiri mwana wekwaChingaira (I am the daughter of Makoni, the descendant of Chingaira), maybe people want to know why I am so fearless. I was born in a family of cadres, it’s in the blood. I am the daughter of Chingaira who had his head taken by the whites.

“I don’t fear anyone…My grandfather was killed by the whites and his head was taken. He was silenced and there is nothing to fear, kufa kufa (I don’t fear death) and threats will never deter us from serving the interests of war veterans.”

Mutsvangwa and his cohorts have argued that Chimene had no locus standi to pass a no-confidence vote in them since she forfeited her post after she spent

“We don’t want to lie saying things are normal, there are some people who want to take other people’s positions,” she said.

“We are simply saying as cadres of the party, it’s too early for you to take someone’s position while he is still there.

“They must be patient, kurasa chiri mumaoko nekuda kuombera (greediness does not pay), you end up not being in the line for that position,” she said.
