LOCAL Government minister Ignatius Chombo last Friday announced a 15-member National Housing Delivery Programme Advisory Committee (NHDPAC) to guide implementation of government’s housing policy.

The committee, which is chaired by CBZ Bank group chief executive officer Never Nyemudzo, comprises civil engineers, town planners, churches and economic empowerment groups.

The development comes after several homeseekers have fallen prey to and lost their money to bogus housing co-operatives.

“The advisory committee is mandated to advocate, co-ordinate and lobby for sustainable human settlements in Zimbabwe and advise from time to time, on topical issues, strategies, appropriate building technology adaptable to climate change and other attendant issues incidental to human settlement goods and services provision,” Chombo said.

“This key committee will also be expected to be a strategic player among stakeholders for efficient delivery of low to medium cost housing.

“It is to advise the minister on topical policy issues, strategies, appropriate technology adaptable to climate change and other attendant issues incidental to the human settlement goods provision.”

Chombo said the committee had many members from the financial institution so that they could facilitate the development of the stands.

“Having financial people in the committee will help to make sure that the money is safe and no one will be giving money to the chairpersons of housing cooperatives, this will reduce the number of people being duped,”Chombo said.

Government has set itself a target to provide 313 368 housing units and stands by December 2018.
