ELTON Mangoma’s newly-formed opposition party, Renewal Democrats of Zimbabwe (RDZ), held its first youth congress on Saturday with the women’s assembly scheduled to hold its own indaba later this month.

The party’s interim spokesperson Pishai Muchauraya said dates for the main wing’s elections would be announced soon after adequate resources had been mobilised.

The RDZ was formed in June after its members broke ranks with the MDC Renewal Team leadership after earlier splitting from the mainstream MDC-T.

“The youth congress was held at Old Hararians Sports Club (Harare) and about 600 delegates drawn from all our 12 provinces participated,” Muchauraya said.

“The congress was held in line with our internal democracy systems where leadership is elected by the people for the people. It is also part of our mobilisation and recruitment drive ahead of 2018 or earlier as the case maybe.

“As RDZ we also believe that any political party needs a very combative youth assembly to drum up support and win elections,” he said.

Fortune Munyonga was elected the party’s national youth leader while Reason Munyapwa was elected secretary-general and Trymore Mpofu as organising secretary.

Muchauraya said the women’s assembly congress is slated for August 28 and all positions were open for contest.

“We will come up with the date for the main congress after the women’s one. We actually wanted it to be held sooner but because of financial constraints it might take longer up, even up to two months,” he said.

Muchauraya said as a party they were concerned about the rising unemployment levels and would work towards formulating policies to steer economic growth.
