THE zanu-pf Masvingo provincial executive has passed a vote of no confidence against provincial chairperson Cde Paradzai Chakona. The province accused Cde Chakona of abusing party property and fanning factionalism. The decision to boot out Cde Chakona was supported by 25 members of the provincial executive council last Friday before endorsement by the provincial co-ordinating committee (PCC) which met here on Sunday.

Former Zanu-pf Zaka district chair Cde Amasa Nenjana will replace Cde Chakona in an acting capacity. Zanu-pf provincial secretary for administration Cde Ezra Chadzamira yesterday confirmed Cde Chakona’s ouster. The decision has since been communicated to the party’s national disciplinary committee.

“The vote of no confidence against Cde Chakona also got overwhelming endorsement from the PCC that met yesterday (Sunday). We now have an acting chairman who will serve until elections to choose a substantive chair are held,’’ he added. Cde Chadzamira said Cde Chakona was fanning factionalism by creating parallel structures during the just ended restructuring exercise in Masvingo province.

He accused Cde Chakona of almost crippling zanu-pf operations in Masvingo by refusing to release party vehicles for use. “Besides promoting factionalism, Cde Chakona was also fired for abusing party property especially vehicles that he refused to release preferring to keep them at his home as if they were his personal property,’’ said Cde Chadzamira. Cde Chakona confirmed that he was no longer chairman.

“In zanu-pf we follow what the party says unlike other parties and I accept the decision that has been taken against me. While I am no longer chairman, the decision to fire me has to be endorsed by the national disciplinary committee of our party,’’ he said.

Cde Chakona said besides being accused of promoting factionalism in Masvingo and abusing party property, he was also accused of failing to properly run the restructuring of lower tier party structures in Chiredzi district.

He was elected zanu-pf acting chairman in December last year following the ouster of Retired Brigadier-General Callisto Gwanetsa who was accused of supporting a cabal led by fired former Vice President Joice Mujuru.
