Harare – The secretary-general of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, Victor Matemadanda was picked up by the police outside the magistrates’ court where he was observing the bail hearing for another senior war vet, Douglas Mahiya.

Detectives from the Law and Order section arrested Matemadanda soon after Mahiya was granted bail after being picked up by the police last Wednesday and accused of insulting or undermining the authority of the president.
The once fiercely-loyal supporters of President Robert Mugabe last month issued a statement in which they accused him of being a dictator.
In the past war vets were accused of orchestrating violence during election time to prop up the 92 year old president who has been in power since 1980.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights is providing the lawyers to represent the two war vets.

QUESTION: Why is ZLHR supporting people who are known to have violated every code of civilised behaviour in the past 20 years?

Mmmhh this is a difficult one isn’t it. We all hate Zanu PF and therefore applaud anyone who takes them on. But we have terrible memories of what the War Veterans have done as well, so it is equally difficult to be sorry for them when the get arrested. I think we have to be strategic about where we place our support. We definitely want ZPF out so we should support the War Veterans, but our support must be tempered with an agreement from the war veterans that they may never return to the days of old
Well, the genuine whore vets are actually all very old now, but indeed they were always very enthusiastic about supporting Organised Crime and acting as Enforcers for The Bhobho. They have only turned on him now because he has run out of things to steal and bribe them with.
I am also wary of the retreaded Zanoids like Mujuru.
