Mliswa sworn in as Norton MP

NEWLY-ELECTED Norton MP, Temba Mliswa (independent) was yesterday sworn in by Clerk of Parliament, Kennedy Chokuda, amid wild cheers from opposition legislators who shouted “Bhuru reZanu (Zanu PF Bull)” after he took oath of office.

Soon after, Mliswa sat on a chair normally reserved for Leader of the House, Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Later, Mnangagwa walked in and gave him a handshake for his victory in the just-ended by-election, where he trounced Zanu PF candidate, Ronald Chindedza by over 2 700 votes.

Meanwhile, Budiriro MP Costa Machingauta (MDC-T), who had caused a furore the previous day after coming into the House wearing a suit with Zimbabwe flag colours, yesterday came back donning a neat brown suit.

Kuwadzana East MP, Nelson Chamisa (MDC-T) raised a point of order with the Deputy Speaker, Mabel Chinomona, pertaining to Wednesday’s violence challenging Parliament’s decision to unleash police to forcefully eject an MP from the House.

“We are going to approach your good office to find a way to have an amicable discussion on what we feel are fundamental abuses of Parliament,” he said.

“It may be important to appreciate that these are fundamental issues that do not require a partisan approach, and they require all of us to know that the integrity of Parliament is not the responsibility of a political party, but it is the responsibility of the people who elected us. We need to find a good solution for our country,” he said.
