VICE-PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s allies in Midlands province have remained defiant and last week snubbed a Zanu PF provincial co-ordinating committee (PCC) meeting organised by acting provincial chairman, Tapiwa Matangaidze.

Zanu PF Midlands provincial spokesperson, Cornelius Mupereri yesterday said he was aware of the aborted PCC meeting scheduled for last Saturday, but he added that Matangaidze — a suspected G40 member — had no authority to organise the meeting, as the executive had passed a vote of no-confidence in him.

“The provincial executive passed a vote of no-confidence in Matangaidze, and as far as we are concerned, he is no longer a member of the organ.

“He, indeed, called for a meeting, but we are not sure which PCC he was calling for a meeting because he has no authority to do so,” he said.

Mupereri said the official meeting for the province would be called soon and will probably be chaired by vice-chairman, Daniel Mackenzie Ncube.

“The Zanu PF constitution is very clear that in the absence of the chairman, the vice-chair takes over. So we are aware that our vice-chairman is still capable of calling for such a meeting and I am sure he will do so very soon,” he said.

Mnangagwa is considered as the Midlands political godfather, but of late, a number of his allies have been purged allegedly at the instigation of G40, which reportedly has the backing of First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Matangaidze was appointed acting Midlands chairman by Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere, following the suspension of Mnangagwa’s ally, Kizito Chivamba.

Party insiders said on Saturday, Matangaidze invited the 50-member provincial executive to a meeting, but none of them turned up.

Efforts to contact Matangaidze for a comment were fruitless yesterday, as his mobile phone went unanswered.
