THE Nigerian journalist who embarrassed President Robert Mugabe during President Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration last month has accused Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa of lying that she had written a letter of apology.

Mnangagwa last week told Parliament that Adeola Fayehun, a journalist with Sahara TV and presenter of the satirical show Keeping It Real Adeola, had apologised for embarrassing the Nigerian government by her behaviour.

But in her new offering, Fayehun said it was a lie that she wrote a letter, setting the record straight also on State media reports that she had been asked to call off her show after the Mugabe incident.

“I don’t think I have laughed that much when a Zimbabwe website said I had apologised to Mugabe. They took my sarcasm and twisted it for their own interest,” she said in her latest show.

“The most interesting article that I read this past week was the one where the Zimbabwean Vice-President said that they received an apology letter from me. So now the Vice-President is also a liar. How do you run a country like that?

“I mean you basically lied; I didn’t write any letter, bring it on.

“Anyway, for the record I did not write an apology letter for asking Mr Mugabe when he will step down.”

Mnangagwa told Parliament last week, while responding to a question from Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena that the journalist had apologised.

“However, we have not received any apology from the Nigerians regarding the issue, but I am aware that the journalist has written to her government apologising for her behaviour and the embarrassment she caused her country,” Mnangagwa said .

Fayehun accused Mugabe of being a dictator and asked him when he would step down.

State media celebrated her alleged apology and claimed it had come as an embarrassment to newspapers like NewsDay that had reported on the incident.
