More toll gates open

via More toll gates open 01 September 2014

Government has operationalised two toll plazas which were constructed as part of the ongoing US$206 million Plumtree-Bulawayo-Harare-Mutare road rehabilitation project.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development through the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has operationalised two additional toll plazas namely the Ruwa-Marondera and the other between Gweru and Kwekwe.

Toll fees to be paid at new toll plazas, which are part of the joint venture agreement between ZINARA and Group Five, would be the same for all vehicle categories with those at other tollgates.

The toll plazas have similar design as those already in use including a computerised system linked to the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) and will use vehicle licence plates to recognise types of vehicles.

Meanwhile, government is confident that the road rehabilitation project will be completed by year end.

The country’s first toll plaza was commissioned on the 10th of April 2013, about 16 kilometres from Bulawayo.

The new toll plazas are envisaged to modernise the country’s road infrastructure in line with government’s drive to rebuild a seamless road transportation system that would enhance regional trade, improve foreign direct investment and increase revenues into the fiscus.

The toll-gates fees should be reduced to a reasonable figure to avoid deterring people from movement in their own country. Instead the Government should increase road traffic fines for offenders. This is a justifiable means of boosting the coffers and no one can complain. The later should be complimented by strict supervision of the traffic police officers who usually pocket the money.

Strange that we used to have some of the best-maintained roads in Southern Africa and we didn’t need tolls to achieve that!

Im actually fine with the Ruwa Marondera tollgate. They have done really well in resurfacing that strip of road and it is only fair that Group 5 and Bitumen world recover their money through the tollgate. I just wish there was more accountability over the funds though.
