DEPUTY Speaker of the National Assembly Mabel Chinomona yesterday told legislators that her boss, Jacob Mudenda, would make a ruling “in due course” on petitions submitted to him by several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) seeking to stop passage of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Debt Assumption Bill.

Chinomona was responding to Mabvuku-Tafara MP James Maridadi (MDC-T) who demanded to know when Mudenda would announce his decision on the issue.

“My constituency Mabvuku-Tafara has tasked me to petition this House to say the RBZ Debt Assumption Bill must be rejected by this House before it goes to Committee Reading Stage,” Maridadi said.

Chinomona consented that Parliament had indeed received the petition.

Several NGOs last week petitioned Mudenda in a bid to thwart passage of the Bill that would see government taking over the RBZ’s $1,35 billion debt.

Chinomona said: “I confirm that my office has received the petition referred to by (Honourable) Maridadi. MDC-T chief whip Innocent Gonese was advised of the procedure of this matter, and the Speaker will rule on the matter in due course.”

If the debt had been incurred for the good of Zimbabwe in general then it would be pertinent for Zimbabweans to foot the bill, however the fact is the dept was appropriated and most of it is unaccountable just like most of what goes on in Zimbabwe, NO ACCOUNTABILITY. Therefor it can not be expected for the Zimbabwean people to be accountable. Quick example:A portion of the Debt comes from Companies that had what was called FCA accounts, had them raided by the Reserve Bank, the Governments proposal is that these same Tax paying Companies now have their Tax payments go through Government coffers to pay themselves back. Question is what’s to stop the same thing happening again when the Reserve Bank mismanages clients reserves?
