HARARE – It is no longer a secret anymore that Zimbabwe is slowly becoming a failed State, as poverty hits hard on defenceless and vulnerable members of the public.

We believe, if President Robert Mugabe has the welfare of the people at heart like he always preaches about, he must spare a moment to visit some of the country’s high density suburbs to witness how poverty has devastated people’s lives.

Mugabe recently complained about the youths abusing drugs, but did he take any moment to think of what has caused this deplorable social ill?

It is clear that Mugabe is being misled by some of his close lieutenants on the state of the country’s economy.

It is a fact that very few are able to live a decent life, 36 years after the country’s independence.

Amid all this poverty, the country has been hit by a cash crisis that has left citizens on a cliff edge.

It boggles the mind if Mugabe is aware of such suffering among ordinary Zimbabweans, who toil on a daily basis to put food on the table.

The bread and butter issues are no longer an important aspect in Zimbabwe, as several sectors of the economy have been run down.

People are drinking unsafe water, the roads are just an eye sore, yet the country’s chief executive officer claims that $15 billion worth of diamonds were looted from the Chiadzwa mining fields.

The country has been dogged by fatal accidents owing to the bad roads that are littered by big potholes.

If Mugabe was to go into high-density suburbs and some rural areas, and get personal feedback, it would help him act on some of the societal ills that have left citizens beggars in their motherland.

The problem with Mugabe’s administration is that each time he visits a high-density suburb, the road that leads to his destination is spruced up days before his arrival.

This paints a beautiful picture of the country, as even street children are removed from the roads.

But facts on the ground show that people are suffering. Several in rural areas are starving after the country was hit by an El Nino-induced drought.

Several others are unemployed, as the situation remains dire.

With such a track record of failure, Mugabe, who has been in power for the past 36 years, is refusing to back down.

He has also shown interest in participating in the 2018 general elections at age 94.
