People First registers as party

Harare–The People First movement led by Joice Mujuru has finally registered with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Mujuru announced the registration of her party that occurred on Friday in a short statement today.

“We are pleased to announce the formal registration of Zimbabwe People First (People First) as a political party through the lodging of the constitution of the party with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on the 12^th of February 2016,” Mujuru said.

She added: “People First is a home-grown, inclusive party that will promote the wishes and aspirations of Zimbabweans first.”

Mujuru said her party was humbled by “by the huge amount of encouragement, enthusiasm and support shown by people from all walks of life of this our great nation towards this noble cause that we are embarking on”.

People First will be issuing a detailed statement on its registration soon, said Mujuru who signed off as the party’s interim president.

Mujuru, President Robert Mugabe’s former deputy, was expelled from Zanu (PF) after the party’s 2014 congress.

Together with dozens of other senior party members who were expelled before and after the congress, Mujuru was accused of seeking to topple Mugabe.

Her replacement, Emmerson Mnangagwa, with who she had been locked in a long battle to succeed Mugabe, is now facing the same fate after the president’s wife on Friday insinuated that he was also seeking to remove Mugabe from power.

Grace played an active part in Mujuru’s removal.

Rugare Gumbo, the former Zanu (PF) information secretary who was removed from the party before the congress and is now the People First spokesperson, in late January announced that their movement would transform into a political formation.
