Maputo (AIM) – Gunmen of the Mozambican rebel movement Renamo on Friday killed one person and seriously injured another in an attack against a convoy of vehicles in the central province of Manica.

According to the Manica provincial police spokesperson, Elsidia Filipe, the Renamo ambush was against the afternoon convoy on the road between Catandica and Vanduzi. The gunmen concentrated their fire against a bus belonging to the company Linhas Terrestres de Mocambique (LTM).
The woman who died was shot in the head, while a second woman passenger was injured by shards of broken glass.
The raiders fled into the bush, but were pursued by members of the defence and security forces. They discovered two small Renamo camps in the Nhaunche region, where they seized 95 rounds of ammunition for an AK-47 assault rifle.
Filipe added that in Mossurize district, in southern Manica, another Renamo group burnt down nine houses and destroyed a vehicle belonging to a “regulo” (“chief”) named Macuo. A four year old child in one of the houses attacked suffered burns.
