The attackers ransacked the health centre, the police station and the residence of the head of the administrative post. During the raid, they stole property including medicines and police uniforms and set fire to buildings.

Witnesses told Radio Mozambique that they saw at least a dozen gunmen take part in the raid.

This was the second attack by Renamo in Maua in a week. Last Sunday, in the administrative post of Muapula, gunmen also destroyed property and stole medicines.

A further attack took place in central Mozambique over the weekend. On Saturday, Renamo attacked the district headquarters of Mopeia in the Zambezia province. During the assault by a group of twenty armed men on the local police station, a prisoner being held in the cells was murdered. Medicines were stolen from the local health clinic, which was vandalised by the assailants. Patients were forced from their beds and their sheets stolen. In addition, two cars were set alight – including one belonging to the education service.
