HARARE – Zanu PF has roped in youths to shore up its dwindling support base in the urban areas by conducting  door-to-door campaigns which have left most residents terrified.

The youths, were this week spotted in Harare’s Southerton suburb where they were demanding to see national identity cards ostensibly to verify if people will be eligible to vote.

This has brought tension in the suburb where most residents are reluctant to volunteer their particulars for fear of either victimisation or abuse.

“We are preparing for elections and there is need to know who our member is and who is not.  Youths don’t want to be left behind and are taking an active role as there are the vanguard of the party,” Kudzanayi Chipanga, Zanu PF youth leader told the Daily News.

“Our youth members are heavily involved in the programme as we want to know the exact  numbers of our supporters, whether they are registered voters or not and whether one has an national identity document. It is an ongoing exercise in the party structures and we are building our party cells,” Chipanga added.

Last week, the youths were also spotted in other areas such as Chitungwiza, Mabvuku, Glen View and the surrounding peri-urban areas Domboshawa and Goromonzi among others.

President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party won the 2013 harmonised elections under controversial circumstances with opposition political parties claiming rigging, intimidation, ghost voters and lack of a credible voters’ roll among other grievances.

This epitomizes lawlessness. Can police please arrest these youths! What right do they have to ask for people’s identity cards? They are not law enforcement agents – why are they harassing people in the privacy of their homes?
