The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority is targeting to complete the modernisation of border posts by 2018, a process which will enhance efficiency. Speaking during the International Customs Day Commemoration, Zimra acting commissioner Mr Tjiyapo Velempini said the modernisation process was almost complete with some of the technological facilities already functional.

He said Zimra had already installed non-intrusive inspection equipment (scanners) at ports of entry and exit to improve clearance. “The modernisation of the border posts will target the busy posts such as the Beit Bridge, Nyamapanda and Chirundu border posts which most of our trading partners use and this will stimulate trade in all the avenues,” he said.

In line with the modernisation of the border posts, Zimra has introduced an electronic registration and electronic filing process aimed at increasing efficiency for all stakeholders.

The modernisation process is being financed through public, private partnerships.

“Joint venture efforts from all stakeholders are critical in ensuring that border processes are constantly improved for the convenience of the transacting public,” he said.

The international Customs Day was running under the theme ‘Co-ordinated Approval Management: An inclusive approach for connecting stakeholders’.

“This year’s theme resonates with Zimra’s quest to contribute positively to improved border efficiencies through proper co-ordination, use of appropriate technologies and adequacy of infrastructure,” said Mr Velempini.

He added that Zimra would improve all the road networks around the country’s border posts because they are essential in the movement of goods into and out of the country.

At the same event, Permanent Secretary for Industry and Commerce Mrs Abigail Shonhiwa said the use of advanced technologies would enhance Zimbabwean businesses through competitiveness and efficiency in all transactions.
