Zinara acting CEO, Moses Juma told NewsDay that the roads administrator has roped in a local company, Univern, for the prepaid tolling card system, which he said is one of the innovations the company was introducing as it moved towards attaining an ISO certification by the end of next year.

“We are going to launch it in the first week of July. We can now prepay tolling fees and at tollgates you just swipe. It’s one of our innovations as Zinara. It [prepaid tolling system] is fully developed, we got approvals from SPB [State Procurement Board],” he said.

“Government is encouraging people to use plastic money due to the limitations of cash, so it’s another initiative to assist our motoring public.”

Zinara is also working with Univern on revenue systems, with Juma saying the partnership has seen a 60% increase in revenue collection. The two also worked on transit and vehicle licensing fee, which resulted in a 300% increase in revenue collection.

Juma said Zinara has started a process, with the Standards Association of Zimbabwe, that would see the roads parastatals getting certification by the end of next year.

“We have a dream that Zinara should be ISO certified, being a blue chip company and registered on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange,” he said.

The roads authority has been accused of failing to take care of the country’s road network.

Zinara board chairman, Albert Mugabe said the road network required an estimated $5 billion to make it safe and efficient.

The requirements came against expected revenue of $200 million this year.

Meanwhile, Zinara and the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Company have joined forces to organise an infrastructure conference on July 20.

The conference will run concurrently with the Mining, Engineering and Transport (Mine Entra) 2016 in Bulawayo.
Mine Entra 2016 runs from July 20 to 22 under the theme Unearthing Opportunities.
