A case for Zimbabweans United for Democracy – ZUNDE

via A CASE FOR ZIMBABWEANS UNITED FOR DEMOCRACY (ZUNDE) January 15, 2014

Since the formation of Zimbabweans United for Democracy (ZUNDE) late last year, multitudes are embracing our vision while some are questioning why we have decided to create another movement. It is appropriate that we address some of these concerns now. A point we need to stress though, is that there is never a wrong time to do the right thing. This response is not to be confused with our detailed policies that will be developed following intense consultation with input from experts in respective areas.

Progressive Zimbabweans at home and in the Diaspora have ultimately come to the realisation that we will not achieve much if we remain bystanders hoping that the existing pro-democracy movements currently on the ground will do everything for us. There is an urgent need for a unifying platform that can rally pro-democracy activists and bring people together in finding a lasting solution to our protracted crisis. “The pen cannot be mightier than the gun” declares ZANU PF, evidently stuck in the primitive mindset and myth that they fought for our country and are therefore entitled to remain in power forever. What a travesty of the liberation war!

ZUNDE is a unifying movement borne out of a fusion of progressive cadres who fought in the liberation struggle and the new generation of pro-democracy fighters. Our form, nature and scope will be determined by our members in response to unfolding events and realities before us. A synopsis of our vision and objectives is:

  1. To create a democratic, peaceful and prosperous Zimbabwe based on equality
  2. To create a vibrant society in which we all work and live in harmony in resolute defence of our freedom and values.
  3. In doing so; to unite Zimbabweans, especially the youth, at home and in the Diaspora to participate, as one, in resolving, once and for all, the political crisis engulfing Zimbabwe.

These objectives are firmly anchored in our core values of Fairness, Accountability, Inclusiveness and Respect (FAIR)

WHY ZUNDE?

ZUNDE, true to our name, is a bridge from the previous futile and failed attempts to dislodge ZANU PF. We are committed to go beyond the 31 July 2013 disappointment. It is a bridge from disunity to unity of purpose, from despondency to hope, from surrender to standing up and from personality focus to values focus, a bridge to our long held national aspirations of freedom and prosperity. ZUNDE represents bold, decisive honest and transformative leadership. The following are some of our characteristics;

  1. ZUNDE is not fighting against individuals but the iniquity of a system.
  2. As we step up the struggle, we recognise and applaud what our predecessors in the fight for democracy have done so far.
  3. We are not accountable to anyone except the people of Zimbabwe wherever they are.
  4. We have not received funding from anyone; our people will fund this noble cause from their personal resources and initiatives.
  5. We stand for what is right for our people from whom we take our mandate.

At ZUNDE, we are quite aware of ZANU PF’s proclivity for violence and intimidation. Nevertheless, for us, FEAR IS NOT AN OPTION. ZUNDE will do whatever it takes, to eradicate this dictatorship that we have been seized with for decades; this is not an empty promise.

OUR COMMITMENT

ZANU PF remains entrenched in power while the opposition movements are seemingly running out of steam. A viable alternative and strategy are, therefore, an urgent necessity. ZUNDE is ready to go the extra mile without resorting to complaining. Once our people agree and decide on a course of action, that becomes ZUNDE’s mandate. We commit to match ZANU PF man to man under any circumstances. Our principles are governed by the following;-

  1. We will fight for the proper running of national elections.
  2. We will not accept that being on the voters’ roll is a privilege when in other countries, voting is mandatory.
  3. Diaspora vote and the right to citizenship are non-negotiable.
  4. We will fight for a government of the people using resources and support of the Zimbabwean people at home and abroad.
  5. We don’t believe in hero-worshipping individuals, every member has a potential to lead the organization. ZUNDE actively promotes the youths to take charge of running the movement as they have the vision, capacity, energy and vibrancy to carry the nation into the future.

ZUNDE understands the frustrations being felt by many in their different pro-democracy parties. Many of us have our origins there. This is their opportunity to re-direct their efforts towards a new initiative that is clear on how real change will come about without resorting to limited options. ZUNDE wishes to assure all genuine activists that they are welcome to join hands with us. For ZUNDE, democracy is now in sight and will be achieved in our life time!

THE END-POINT & PAY-OFF

ZUNDE is not an opportunistic or transient movement. We are not newcomers as we have participated in both the liberation struggle as well as the fight for democracy in Zimbabwe.

The assumption or assertion that Mugabe is part of the solution proved to be a gross miscalculation. The GNU did not deliver much for the people of Zimbabwe. If anything, it served to prolong the people’s suffering by giving ZANU PF a new lease of life, and for some, an opportunity to amass personal wealth.

ZUNDE believes in the long standing counsel that we are our own liberators. Therefore, we will not outsource the people’s struggle for freedom, dignity, humanity and prosperity. Those that liberated Zimbabwe did that so the people could be more, not less, sovereign. ZUNDE emphasises that it is everyone’s responsibility to unite our people and decide how best we are going to liberate ourselves.

ZUNDE has a clear end-point. Our struggle shall be complete when the evil dictatorship system is eradicated and replaced with a viable and enduring democratic dispensation. We recognise that some of our people, in particular, those in public institutions have been forced to surrender to the ZANU PF patronage system ostensibly for survival. Through relevant commissions of enquiry and other legal instruments, ZUNDE will actively facilitate and promote rehabilitation for those willing to serve professionally in the new democratic dispensation.

Zimbabwe is our motherland. United we can do it.

What is wrong with dreaming, especially dreaming the right thing? Who has stolen from the people so far? Have you seen any ZUNDE guys carrying diamonds? What opportunists will be worse than those stealing the resourses God gave to the people of ZImbabwe? If you do not know the amswers to these there is no point talking to you. You are not well.

Who are the faces of Zunde, why not come out in the open…You seem to be cowards, or a one man show luring many more to fall in. What we need is genuine unity not unity while create more confusion as the case of Mavambo 2008.

What Zimbabwe now need is an umbrella opposition entity uniting all genuine opposition political parties and acts only as a temporal/transitional organisation, which disbands over a period of say a year after ushering in democracy for the people of Zimbabwe.

We cannot continue to mutate in our struggle against the evil Zanu. Remember ZAPU, FORUM, ZUM, ZUD, MDC now ZUNDE come-on,

If you visit their website http://www.zunde.org, they became known a long time ago. You are obviously behind and you have not read their website and what they stand for and therefore we forgive you. You do not understand what you are saying. ZUNDE is saying their end game is to usher in democracy. Who rules Zimbabwe thereafter is your business, the people’s business. ZUNDE is the dream I have been waiting for. And no foul language please. How does that help you other than boosting your already inflated ego!!.

We wait and see weather this is a ploy to further split the opposition vote. I don’t think that the opposition party’s should have a united front because over the years we have seen the ruling party create these partys and split the vote. We need one of two things. Political rejuvenation by the strongest opposition party or a political coup within the Zanu pf party that will change their whole way of thinking. AND THEN I WOKE UP as my brother NBS put it.

While I appreciate the effort All opposition parties are making, it is imperative one opposition party be formed from all the others . This is important to weed out the true future leaders our people. But the people must choose their members to represent them . Therefore each region must choose their own without fear or favour and from all groups and races. Individuals chosen must be screened and vetted and given a code of conduct contract to sign. We must get hard now on our elected people or else we will just be creating another monster. Zimbabweans are tired and I for one am sick to death of hearing the same story. Our future is in our hands and all parties must begin to realise this or else they are all doomed to fail. And that includes Zanu. Bassop

Shameless ZANU PF zealots making noise on this forum must go back home & enjoy the fruits of their “victory”. Didn’t somebody tell them that their party is VERY much in power? Endai mundobetserana kuba & leave progressive minds to explore viable options. If you don’t have money for air tickets, ZUNDE will make a donation.

John Thomas, ZUNDE won’t prove itself by stealing diamonds, killing industry or torturing people. It will prove itself through programs which will be be rolled out at the right time. If you read the statement again, you will notice that policies are in the pipe-line. What proof do you want from a movement that is hardly 3 months old & but has already covered the globe? Why don’t you demand the same from Madhuku and NCA that have been around much longer? The truth is that if ZANU PF and its zealots like you John Thomas, direct anger at anything, then Zimbabweans know that there is something postive happening. Pls keep campaigning for ZUNDE, you’re doing VERY well but you won’t be paid for it!!!

How can a party start and commit to field candidates without even a policy document, iRunde for sure

  • comment-avatar

Yes! How does a united front split votes? If we had true unity between the opposition parties ZPF would be in a sweat. But we don’t and that is our own fault. We cannot speak with one voice because ‘self’ gets in the way. Everyone has his own selfish agenda. I like Zunde’s vision! Think of it this way. If all opposition parties united and stood together to bring a true democracy and a solid 5 year mandate to rule shared by all parties to get the country back on track; after that every one would be free to campaign for his own party for the next elections. But we cannot aspire to this until we put all selfish ambitions aside and think of the nation as a whole! Everyone thinks they can do it from all the MDC’s,to Zapu, to MKD,to the NCA etc. No we can’t. Alone we can’t. United we can! Hasn’t anyone heard, “United we stand: divided we fall?” Can’t we see that this divisionary tactic has been used well by ZPF. And we fall for it every election! Wake up guys! Please wake up!

Ah, shucks!!! Here we go again. Clearly the MDC is dead and burried and a vacuum has been created. In comes ZUNDE. Another group of dilusional opportunists who are trying to over-intellectualize a problem. By being so academic in your approach, you have already given ZPF the right to consolidate the rural areas. When will opposition parties realise that the base you need to capture is the rural folk. Websites, forum posts etc do not reach the majority of the electorate. What is your grass roots strategy? How are you reaching out to the people in the sticks? You will be applauded and flattered in the leafy bars of Harare and Bulawayo, but what you have to realise is that those votes dont win you an election.

Good luck. At least you are soliciting funding and probably eating the money of your sponsors.

Bhora, Zunde is only 3 months old. It was formed in November by people educated enough to know the electronic media. Can you blame them for using the internet so far? Why do you not wait and see if they will not penetrate the ordinary masses. Why do you not give people who want to do it a chance?
Zunde are already on the ground in Zimbabwe and you will have known it if you live in Zimbabwe. They are not stupid. They have a strategy to get to the people and all you need to do it be patient. As for donors they are saying they are self funding and what is wrong with that. Even if they get donor money what is wrong with that? It is whether they use it for themselves or to fight the people’s case. Let us see what they achieve. They are a bunch of genuine good guys who will not repeat the mistakes made by the opposition in Zimbabwe so far. I like them. At least they are doing something. What are you doing? Zero!!
