At least two MDC T- activists were arrested Monday in Harare as they marched through the streets in commemoration of the 1976 Soweto student uprisings also known as June 16.
June 16 is a public holiday in South Africa in remembrance of the uprisings which were started by students in protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The MDC-T also commemorates the annual event as they equate the fate of the then South African students with the oppression faced by Zimbabwean youths under ZANU PF rule.
SW Radio Africa correspondent Simon Muchemwa said hundreds of youths were gathered at the Harare Town House footbridge on Monday when the police pitched up trying to disperse the crowds. When the youths refused to oblige the police arrested the youth secretary for Harare Province Denford Ngadziore.
Muchemwa said after the incident the youths marched to the Harare Gardens where they were addressed by their leaders at the Pavilion Square. Skirmishes with the police ensued again an hour later as the youths gathered outside the party headquarters at the Harvest House. The riot police were called in, leading to the arrest of another party member.
According to Muchemwa, MDC-T national youth spokesman Clifford Hlatshwayo said the youths demanded jobs and an end to oppression and poverty.

This police force are a disgrace to our nation. Money collectors parading themselves in what was once a highly respected uniform. The day they said SORRY the theft of your goods and property is “political” was the day they ceased having any moral authority over the people of Zimbabwe. Spit on them.

The imposition of Afrikaans onto blacks in Soweto led to the 1976 uprisings. The imposition of Shona on Matebeleland people, by the gukurahundi at gun point is surely leading to that re-enacting of the Soweto uprisings in Mthwakazi.
Even Morgan Tswangirayi has taken from Mugabe and sees nothing wrong with imposing his Shona on the Mthwakazi people. Will we ever learn? Not everyone is Shona in Zimbabwe and Shona people should stop assuming that by virtue of being from Zim one understands and speaks Shona. Even if I did understand it, I would not speak it under duress.
Besides, it is an undisputable fact that Shona as a language is not just a minority language; the Shona people themselves are a minority in the Mthwakazi region.
The Mthwakazi people never impose Ndebele or any of their languages in Shona provinces; why cant the Shona people do likewise in Mthwakazi and integrate with the local populace.
This language tribalism is really their way of asking for trouble – watch your backs!!
Sharpshooter you are off topic! Do not attempt to induce segretory sentiments to maZimbabwe. Those sentiments are a result of terrible inferiority complex under display. Mthwakazi is not even the name of the Matabeleland but a titular pronounce of uluntu jikelele. Do us a favour and seek a better platform for your regionalistic convictions. Brave young people setting an example to the nation as what needs to be done to send massage to the regime.
Maybe this was tactical, but I would have expected more of the youth to participate.
Afterall, these are legitimate demands by the youth…jobs, end to oppression and poverty , etc etc, the very tenets of the liberation struggle.
And that there were only two arrests is, hopefully a good sign.
Now the rest of the populace needs to join the youth.
The time has come for the youth to fight for their rights . The older generation did.
