Mahachi remains suspended

Suspended Harare town clerk Tendai Mahachi can only be reinstated after a full council meeting, Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni said yesterday.

Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo controversially reinstated Mahachi in the presence of Manyenyeni over the weekend. But Manyenyeni said it was his call, whether or not to recall Mahachi.

“The directive to reinstate the town clerk came from the minister, but it will be my duty to reinstate him and there are processes we are still considering,” Manyenyeni  told the Daily News yesterday.

“We will have a special full council meeting on Wednesday to specifically address that issue.”

Mahachi was suspended on Thursday pending investigations into allegations of failing to discharge his duties and furnishing council with the salary schedule for Town House bosses.

Manyenyeni had said the suspension will be for a period of three months and was done in terms of Section 13 of the Urban Councils Act.

The three-month suspension came after media reports revealed that Mahachi, together with 18 managers, took home about $500 000 monthly.

Chombo told a press conference in Harare over the weekend that Mahachi would be reinstated as he could not be used as a sacrificial lamb because of a salary schedule whose origins were unknown.

He claimed Manyenyeni had consented to Mahachi’s reinstatement, a statement immediately rebuffed by the mayor at the press conference.

They can not mean 500 000 USD monthly salary, that must be a mistake – maybe they mean annually?
