#mugabe backs Uganda’s anti-gay law

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has thrown his weight behind Uganda’s draconian anti-gay laws and hinted at a crackdown on gays in his own country, state media reported Monday.

He castigated the West for punishing Kampala with aid cuts after President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill that banned homosexuality in the east African country.

“They (the West) want to tell us… that it’s a violation of human rights, that is what they are doing to Museveni right now,” Mugabe said.

“The human right you have as a man is to marry another woman not to get another man to marry, we refuse that,” said Mugabe at a weekend wedding reception of his only daughter Bona.

Mugabe has previously said homosexuality is un-African and described gays and lesbians as worse than pigs and dogs.

“It’s a terrible world we are in, a terrible world where people want to do things that they feel will enhance their own interests.”

He said until recently he was not aware of the existence of an association of homosexuals in Zimbabwe, and warned he would want to know who belongs to the group.

“I understand we have a group of homosexuals in this country. I didn’t know until I was told the day before yesterday. So we want to check on who is in that group,” Mugabe said.

The Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (Galz) has long operated in the country despite Mugabe’s ranting against homosexuality.

Police have on several occasions raided the Galz offices and prosecutors had laid charges against the association accusing it of operating an unregistered organisation.

However, a magistrate dismissed the case last week. Same sex marriages are outlawed in Zimbabwe.

Of all the policies that Uncle Bob has put forward this is the only one I agree with, only a man and a woman can make a family, even the bible says so

    • Ruramai says:

Chidumbu, would you care to explain what should happen to people who are born transgender at birth since you seem to imply you are an authority at “nature”?

  2. Chidumbu says:

or should I say nature says so

  3. martinnn says:

Who cares what the Bible says it’s just a story book.

  4. Joe says:

Why does Mugabe not check which idiots he has in government. He should start by looking into the mirror first. Bloody fool

  5. Zimbo says:

I personally dont give a rats ass about peoples sexual preferences. What I do care about is this mans holier than thou attitude. He talks about personnel enhancement. What the hell has he been doing for the last 34 years?Events of the last two weeks says it all.Good Lord, are there no mirrors in that wonderful mansion of yours?I suggest you get one and take a long hard look at yourself! Then tell us what you see.Because I know what I see.I see a man that has brought nothing but misery to this beautiful land and its peoples.

  6. John Thomas says:

Gay rights are not a very interesting subject. The gays can fight their own battles. What is more interesting is that if Mugabe and Musaveni agree on something then it must by definition be wrong. These are bent men. My own understanding is that those who like to shout out against gays are fighting against the homosexuality within themselves. Look at both of them. They look gay.

  7. Murimi Wanhasi says:

Anyone who supports men having anal sex is mad.
Degrees, saville row suits and all,but mad.
@Martinnnn.U think denying the truth about the bible makes u modern?it just confirms who yo master is.

    • Ruramai says:

Murimi, you don’t have to support it because sex is a private matter. Question is, given sex happens behind closed days, how can anyone claim to want to know how it is done? What gives you that right when no one interferes with how you make love to your wife? Why do you choose to make it your business who sleeps with who and how? Only perverts obsess with what other people do consensually in private.

Question; have you ever bothered to actually read about the science of homosexuality?

  8. ike says:

On which planet does Mugabe stay! Only yesterday he was told that such an organization exists. I suspect Robert junior is a member of the organization. These guys, don’t they chat as family? It just shows how dysfunctional the”1st” family is!!

  9. ike says:

It’s the devil who stands against what the bible says martinnnnnnn!

    • Ruramai says:

Ike, Christianity is not the only religion on this planet so it is narrow minded to expect everyone to adhere to biblical tenets.

  10. Sekuru Mapenga says:

    Personal freedom is personal freedom.
Being free includes the freedom to make mistakes and choices.
    These are not divisible.
To say to someone – you are free to do those things that I approve of – that is no freedom at all.
and finally – get over your homophobic attitudes.

  11. Just saying says:

Typical of our illustrious leader to want to divert the country’s attention. While I personally don’t care much for these so called ‘gay’ people there are clearly much more important matters that the president should be addressing. For starters what about the starving people of Tokwe Mukorsi or ‘salarygate’ for that matter????

  12. Roving Ambassador says:

These are all diversionary tactics, and people easily fall for it. We all know who has destroyed the lives of Zimbabweans, we all know who is guilty of treason. The gays ,have they killed anyone, is there any public indecency issue, I have known gays who are artistic, patriotic, compassionate and good natured people, unlike the group of Zanoids in control.
We need leadership that recognise the diverse nature of the nation use that to propell us forward
People open up . Think. These people are humans like all of us . Let the one without sin cast the first stone. Hypocrisy

  13. Ruramai says:

Here is what I cannot believe was said by our nonagenarian president, who also happens to be one of the most incompetent presidents the world has ever seen; “It’s a terrible world we are in, a terrible world where people want to do things that they feel will enhance their own interests”.

This old man is an incorrigible hypocrite. Zimbabwe is a basket case because this geriatric has done nothing but serve his own interests. He is talking about Ugandan laws when he hasn’t even been to see the suffering of those displaced by the Tokwe-Mukorsi floods.

Diverting attention from the real issues affecting this country is all he does. We want him to create employment and make sure the country grows enough to feed itself. But then again, that would mean him stopping his cherished desire to serve his own interests. Pathetic.

  14. Murimi Wanhasi says:

@Ruramai.Where is yo rural home?God help them.
I dont want my children seeing grown men kissing and fondling, speaking in squeeky voices.Nonsense.
The science of being gay…oh rubbish Ruramai.U can do better than that.
Tell me,if being gay is genetic, why r there no celibate gays.” “Hey guys,im gay,but I will not sleep with anyone”Rubbish

So Bob cant comment about any other issue besides the economy.get real, haters!

    • chirasha says:

he can but the bible is saying we should evaluate ourselves, and not to see a speck in other people eyes ,has he evaluated himself since 1980 to date

    • Ruramai says:

Murimi, it’s your choice how you want to raise your children. What gives you the right to interfere with how adults choose to make love. I repeat, only perverts are interested in what individuals do, CONCENTUALLY behind closed doors. Zvinei newe? Does anyone tell you who to sleep with?

You are the hater for advocating discrimination against people who do you no harm. Leave them alone because it simply has nothing to do with you. How does consensual sex between people, whether they are heterosexual harm you or anyone for that matter?

I asked you a simple question; have you actually read the science behind homosexuality? What do you say about people wh are born transgender?

It is common practice for those who have no facts to back their arguments to simply say “rubbish”. Murimi, it helps to read, you know.

  15. Murimi Wanhasi says:

@Ruramai.I choose to raise my children in Zim,where gay gangsters will not see the light of day.
Homosexuality is as unnatural as beastiality, but in yo books its ok since its done in private.
Remind me to send u a chicken.

    • Ruramai says:

Murimi, indeed you have a right to choose but, I say it again for the umpteenth time, it is not your business who people choose to sleep with consensually. You also have every right to wallow in your ignorance. Only an ignorant person would equate bestiality with homosexuality. In case you are aware of it, bestiality involves a human being having sex with an animal. Naturally, it is deemed an offence because the animal has no say in the matter.

As long as two gay people choose to have consensual sex, (in other words, when neither of the parties is being coerced), why would anyone with an iota of a brain compare it to bestiality? Reading about some of these things would help you not to make a fool of yourself in a public forum.

I choose to preach values of tolerance to my children, that they have no reason to fear those who will not harm them. You seem to choose bigotry. That is sad in the 21st century.

  16. I think it was Hutu that said Murimi will now choose his topics carefully on this forum?

  17. Ruramai says:

Jack the Rabbit, indeed Murimi is choosing his topics carefully. I have noticed how he has been mum on corruption and the fact that Mugabe has done nothing for the flood victims of Tokwe-Mukorsi. Gay bashing is a lot easier than talking accountability.

  18. Nyoni says:

Mugabe acts like he is perfect. He was gay and merry at Bonas wedding.

  19. Hutu says:

I think he had a bad time with the subject during his time in jail. It is a documented fact that one of his cell mates were gay.

  20. Murimi Wanhasi says:

@Doc. I agree that was uncalled for.Murimi does not engage in gutter talk, but this gay thing….eish.

MURIMI will soon stop selectivity. He will make his insightful comments on most topics.
    He was facing connection issues

  21. Ma1 says:

Murimi is ignorant and says things for the sake of it, honestly the world is evolving and no matter how much you condemn them its invetable and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Where was Mugabe when Cannan Banana was seducing our young boys, he new, it happenned during his watch and never condemned Banana, such a lier, and dont tell me Mugabe did not do it Mujeri.

  22. Murimi Wanhasi says:

Murimi will gladly keep his ignorance.

  23. Hutu says:

It is also a known fact that some of the Zanu appointees at pockets hill were also Gay. It is not for me to condemn or condone this state of being but I will say that Museveni is a mad man to want to lock these people up for life. The people that bash must realize that it might one day it might be your child being bashed.. or maybe you disown them..

  24. Roving Ambassador says:

This is the Zimbabwe for me, people accommodating other’ disposition or position. You made my evening.

  25. UMAARI says:

Africans are pure, but this issue of gays and lesbians initialized from Roma et Rena (male and female) of Italy who were fatherless in the meantime married each other, who did this action Italian era people; Roma which is translated as ‘dog’ while Rena is translated ‘as male and female’; both Roma and Rena breastfed dog.

When we say they breastfed dog, we don’t mean human can breastfeed dog but that means that they breastfed Africa’s blood and flash and they hidden the issue ‘dog’
