A Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) student got himself in trouble for allegedly calling President Robert Mugabe a dog because he was failing to fullfill his election campaign promises.

Honest Makasi, 34, of Majange high density suburb, was on Wednesday hauled before Masvingo magistrate Dorothy Mwanyisa facing charges of insulting the president.

Makasi is facing charges of violating a section of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act by publicly undermining the authority of the presidency.

The GZU student becomes the second person from the same institution to insult the president after lecturer, ChenjeraI Pamhirwa.

Prosecutor James Nyamapfeni told the court that on September 14 this year at Majange Business Centre, Makasi, who was in the company of his friends shouted that “President Mugabe imbwa haasi kukwanisa kuita zvaakataura pamacampaign ainyepera vanhu” (President Mugabe is a dog, failing to do what he promised during campaigns and had lied to the people.)

He was reported to the police by some alleged Zanu PF supporters.

Makasi, who is represented by Martin Mureri of Matutu, Kwirira and Associates, denied the charge.

In his line of defence, Mureri said Makasi was an active member of the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai and was being victimised for campaigning for his party during the run-up to the July 31 polls.

He was remanded to November 11 for trial.

Since the July 31 harmonised polls over 10 people in the province have been arrested and dragged to court for insulting the president.

As “man’s best friend”, I think all dogs should rightly feel offended by the comparison.

Agree with Chooks 100%. My dog is much better than Mugabe and his band of thieves and murderers! If I had a choice I would die for Bingo than die for Mugabe whose hands drip with Innocent blood of mothers and fathers he butchered during Gukurahundi

Tiudzeiwo magweta: Reports last week were that Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court has revoked a law against insulting the president, on the grounds that it runs counter to the freedom of expression enshrined in the new constitution, introduced in March. It was stated that the Minister of Justice has until November 20 to appeal the ruling. If this student’s case is scheduled to be heard November 11, where does that put his case, legally.

If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.
