Teen bailed over ‘Mugabe in freezer’ Facebook post

via Teen bailed over ‘Mugabe in freezer’ Facebook post | SW Radio Africa by Nomalanga Moyo on Monday, January 20, 2014

Police charged 18-year-old Gumisai Manduwa for posting a message on Facebook claiming that Mugabe had died and was being kept in a freezer.

A teenager who was arrested Thursday and accused of insulting President Robert Mugabe is out of custody after a Mutare magistrate granted him bail on Saturday.

Police charged 18-year-old Gumisai Manduwa from Odzi in Manicaland, with breaching the country’s criminal laws when he posted a message on Facebook claiming that Mugabe had died and was being kept in a freezer.

Mugabe’s health is a closely guarded secret, and until his reappearance Sunday many Zimbabweans had been speculating that he could be dead, given his advanced age and rumours that he has cancer.

Kumbirai Mafunda, spokesman for Zim Lawyers for Human Rights who represented the teenager, confirmed Manduwa’s release on $30 bail.

“As a lobby group we feel that the police are being overzealous by arresting people on allegations of undermining President Mugabe.

“The police should not be wrongfully targeting and arresting people for expressing themselves. This is a waste of State resources and we have seen more and more of these cases being thrown out by the courts,” Mafunda added.

Mafunda said Manduwa is the latest victim to be arrested for allegedly undermining authority or insulting Mugabe.

“In 2011, Bulawayo magistrate Rose Dube dropped the case against Vikas Mavhudzi, who was being charged with subversion because of an alleged post on Facebook. No evidence of the message could be found.”

Unfortunate for this young fellow to express his wish and then get caught. Many a lot have been sharing the rumor in recent weeks but were fortunate to get away with it. All the young man should have said was he wished Mugabe was dead and his body kept in a freezer than to say it as if he had first hand information. This only serves to show Mugabe has out-lived his popularity hence this suppression of any discerning voices

I don’t think this young man is wrong by insulting head of state, is just following uncle bob’s foot steps, its very rare for uncle when is at any gathering/ funeral to finish his speech without insulting other head of state or tsvangirai. Vana vanenge vachiona kana kunzwa. Rimwe gore mukadzi aipopotedzana nemurume wake mumba mune vana nenyaya yekuti baba vanga vabva harare vasina grocery, izvi hazvina kufadza mukadzi akatanga kuyukira murume, basa rekupedzera mari mumahure. Mumwe wemwana hana kuziva kuti hure munhu kadzi nzenza, akafunga kuti rure chinhu chinodyiwa chinonaka chaizvo. Izvi hazvina kubuda mupfungwa dzemwana akazoti vava pachiteshi baba vapinda mubhazi, akadedzera bye bye baba kana makudzoka musazokanganwa nditengerawo hure one. Baba namai vakanyara zvikuru. So this young man he always see/ watch every time bob insult tsvangirai/mabritish madzimai nenababa vanoombera nekupururudza, kuratidza kuti bob is doing a very good thing and has never been questioned/arrested abt insults, bcause thats his right to say what he thinks abt other people, so as to this boy to say what he thinks abt bob thats his right. Vakuru musati kana makurirwa pazvitsvinyo mosungura imbwa dzenyu kuti dzirime vakukurirai.

Mujibha thanks for your accurate observation. I do not recall when I last heard Mugabe give a valuable speech relevant the sorry state of our nation. All he does is insult all and sundry as if that will bring food to the table. It is as if he is not even aware that Tony Blair and George Bush left office a long time ago. He never says anything constructive yet he finds it necessary to punish an 18 year old for what is obviously a joke. Pathetic, primitive and tragic.

He is not uncultured. He picked up a rumour that had been seculating for a while. If this youngster is uncultured, what do you say about Mugabe who is always insulting other people at every opportunity he gets? Primitive perhaps? Barbaric maybe?

    @Ruramai .Uncultured,definately.
Since when do u have the little boys in your clan announcing the death of the patriarch?.Nonsense.

Murimi, he didn’t announce any death because there was no death. He joked about an issue that has been joked about for years for the simple reason that our president is old and unpopular.

I repeat the question; what do you say about a president who is always insulting other people who include opposition party members and foreign heads of state in full view of the word which includes your children and mine? What lessons are they meant to draw from it?

As for the pres scoldin the west & the tsvangisons, they had it coming. He is expressing his views against an arrogant lot,who cunningly impose sanctions on the country, while labelling them targeted.
If I may ask,on what platform was he supposed to air his views?

@Mujibha.Understand that the colonial system was designed to prop up the interests of the few.
Credit must be given to the government for successfully intergreting the majority into the mainstream economy without really upsetting the “good times”
Balancing populist socialist and Marxist policies with the market realities, was never going to be easy, hence the adoption of ESAP,which some say accelarated our demise.
Another major bump was the 1997 payouts.
Other than that,Mujibha, can u really say we were suffering up to 2000?
    Look at RSA.20years on.
Who had more progress after 20yrs of independence,us or them, excluding tech innovations brought in by the internet.?
So where did we go wrong?
I go back to the land invasions of 2000.Thats when the cardinal sin was committed, and we have been paying for it since then.
We got infected then, and all that u r seeing now are just the symptoms.

I cannot defend corruption or the rot in some parastatals, but the blame for our predicament includes those reprisals from the west

Murimi wanhasi, yes u r right that colonial system wad designed to prop the interest of the few, this is why we went to war. Payouts- who is to blame, i still is the president. Why? He is the head of state with all powers to sanction/stop what he thinks is right/wrong for the country, like those payouts, he knew/very much aware that was going to destroy the economy, why did he let those payouts go ahead? He only give in to hunzvi, he is the one who was leading them war vets. Why bob did that i don’t know. Progress, compring to was left by smiths regime, i don’t we r better than south africa. As a free zimbabwe, which is rich in minerals and agricultural i think if it was’nt corruption we were suppose to be far far much better than south. Were did we go wrong, corruption, who is to blame? Again bob. I don’t know if u remember what happened with willowgate

Saying is one farm to a family if u do have two give the other to the government for resetlement. And what happened did those landless people get anything out of it? Just a few. And how many farms he himself his family got. If I’m not mistaken over ten. Why? If you say I’m wrong by acussing him to be part of corruption, just check his current cabinet some of those people have been there since 1980, and they underperfoming. Whats that? Corruption. Are u telling me that in zanu pf they r no young people who can b ministers and tackle some of our problems. Panyaya yeminda yes he was right kuti ape vasina pekurima pekurima.
