via Vigil supports genuine asylum seekers – Zimbabwe Vigil Diary: 22nd March 2014
The Vigil has made a new approach to the Home Office over the sending back of asylum seekers to Zimbabwe. Our latest letter to Home Secretary Theresa May came as thousands of people demonstrated in London against the UK’s asylum policy. The letter was delivered to the Home Office by Fungayi Mabhunu.
Here’s the text of our letter to Ms May: We enclose a petition protesting at the proposed deportation of a committed Zimbabwean human rights activist Trymore Mahachi. It has been signed by people passing the Zimbabwe Vigil, which has been demonstrating outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London every Saturday for the past twelve years in support of free elections and human rights in Zimbabwe. As explained in the petition, Trymore has played a prominent role at the Vigil and it is believed that he could well be penalised for this if he is returned to Zimbabwe. We hope, in the light of this, you will reconsider his deportation. We are disappointed not to have received a reply to a letter we wrote to you on 21st February objecting to Home Office case workers using libelous evidence against the Vigil. We enclose a copy of our letter and attachments and hope you will now respond to it.
The petition reads: ‘Don’t deport Trymore Mahachi: Try Mahachi is a committed activist against human rights abuses and for democracy in Zimbabwe. He has regularly attended the Zimbabwe Vigil and is a leader of our protest activities: singing of protest songs, praying for the suffering people in Zimbabwe, engaging with the public to keep them informed of events in Zimbabwe. All in all he is a high-profile activist who is likely to be known to the authorities in Zimbabwe. He is currently in Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre and has been told he will be forcibly deported back to Zimbabwe on 27th March. We appeal to the Home Secretary not to send him back to a country where he could face abuse for his opposition to Mugabe and the Zanu PF regime.’

A number of Vigil supporters took part in the demonstration against the UK’s asylum policy ending in a rally at Trafalgar Square, around the corner from the Vigil. Some of the demonstrators carried banners reading ‘No human is illegal’.
We sympathise with their anxiety about asylum issues but the Vigil’s view is more nuanced. While we oppose the deportation of those who have a just claim for asylum, we are equally opposed to the system being abused by people such as Zanu PF supporters, who seem to be busier than the MDC in setting up structures in the UK (see: Zanu-PF holds historic Birmingham UK conference – http://www.zimeye.org/zanu-pf-holds-historic-birmingham-uk-conference/). Why are they in the hated UK at all if they support the illegal regime in Harare? How can anyone defend their presence here – the very people that forced millions of Zimbabweans into exile?
In association with our sister organisation Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe, the Vigil is trying to track the treatment of returned Zimbabweans when they arrive home. We are particularly concerned, for instance, about a young man of 23 recently returned to Zimbabwe with no support network there after living in the UK for 5 years or more.
Other points
- The Vigil is still making enquiries about a possible protest in Brussels if Mugabe attends the EU / Africa Summit on 2nd / 3rd April. We are trying to get the necessary permission from the Belgian police and would welcome any help with this. A number of people have expressed their eagerness to take part, including Swazi friends opposing the presence at the Summit of King Mswati III.

Vigil co-ordinators
The Vigil, outside the Zimbabwe Embassy, 429 Strand, London, takes place every Saturday from 14.00 to 18.00 to protest against gross violations of human rights in Zimbabwe. COMMENTS
Unless Human Rights Organisations revert to being apolitical they cant be considered Human Rights Organiasations.
This is something that is yet to be understood in Zimbabwe.
Name one apolitical Human Rights Organisation – one that has not taken funding from funds for political support only?
If you can I would be fascinated because I cannot think of any genuine Human Rights Organisation that has not been polluted by politics.
Currently organisations like the ICC at the HAGUE are investigating this and the local law society/crime.
There are no honest instances of any person from Zimbabwe deserved of asylum and several e-prtitionds objecting to this – understandable as they deplete social benefits wrongfully.
There may be criminals with ourtstanding warrants of arrest but they are not eligible for consideration for asylum.
The more demonstrations using state benefits the more objection there will be from British Nationals – there is a need for the uneducated to understand that people pay tax, work for a living and to see those not even bothering to work, demonstrating, illegally claiming asylum benefits turns the working british public against them.
Zimbabwe has not requested their return, as who needs loafers in society.
If they have broken the law then they should come back and face court – its not an excuse to claim asylum.
As funding dries up the international community finally realizing the Human Rights Organisations have conned them then it is hoped they will become fair and apolitical again as all countries need genuine Human Rights Organisations.
The investigations underway internationally seriously affect all local Human Rights Organisations with some members regarded as confidence tricksters and one group as terrorists accepted by the Home Office and FBI.

@Small Axe – You are a load of rubbish – name one person from Zimbabwe that has an honest reason to claim asylum- honest reason, not running from crime.
Its a challenge – just one individual, if you find it hard, an obviously do as you have no name, then all who are involved are confidence tricksters and deserve to be deported or jailed.
You are a C10. Its not your fault. Its a nice try. But for your information not all asylum seekers are after benefits. Most of them are now professionals in the UK. Don’t forget they are part of the diasporas who helped your cruel regime to survive the 2008 hyper inflation by sending money back home . In fact you are an idiot.

How can a Human Rights organisation be apolitical?
Human Rights are a political question.
A club for bird watchers or chess players can be apoloitical, but a HR organisation or a Trade Union cannot.
@Don Cox, its a struggle but the only human rights organisations in the world that are political are in Zimbabwe – with a little education you can learn what human rights are.
Its amazing but even prisoners have rights. wow that was hard to understand wasn’t it.
Unfortunbately due to justified complains the EU amongst others hase cut funding to the political organisations in Zimbabwe.- understand now, a human rights organization cannot be political EVER.
Ah, these fake assylum seekers should just come home. They serve no purpose and I am glad that the UK government are starting to see through this. There are many more outspoken people in Zimbabwe today who wake up and go to work without any harassment. What makes these people think that they are more important than that? You spending days in Trafalgur square making a nuisance of yourselves does not consitute an assylum seekers! You call for continued sanctions on Zimbabwe.. You petition against Zimbabwe being invited to mulitlateral meetings that could benefit normal Zimbabweans… Why?? So that you can remain relevant? Please do us all a favour and come home and make a real difference…
@ Bhora – I agree with much of your comment but really of what use will these loafers claiming asylum payments be to Zimbabwe. Rather forget they exist.
