via 1,000 cops axed over corruption, minister – New Zimbabwe 27/06/2015
MORE than a thousand police officers have been expelled from the country’s law enforcement agency in the past three years for corruption related offences, absenteeism and a host of other misdemeanours, a senior government official has revealed.
Addressing backbenchers in parliament last week, Home Affairs deputy minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said at least 1,161 cops were dislodged from the ZRP since 2012.
The Zanu PF Mashonaland West interim chair had been asked by Southerton MP Gift Chimanikire to brief legislators on the force’s annual turnover through resignations, deaths and discharges in the past three years.
Of the police rejects, 345 were dismissed in 2012, 448 in 2013 and a further 368 finding itself jobless as of last year.
Ziyambi said the dismissals were carried out in terms of the provisions of the Police Act which empower the authority to expel any of its members for misconduct.
“Discharges…where a member is discharged after conviction of a criminal offence,” he said.
The deputy minister continued: “Unfit for police duties … where a member is discharged for failing to adhere to the police code of ethics and it is recommended that he/she be discharged as unsuitable for police duties.
“Desertion … where a member is discharged after absenting himself/herself for a continuous period of twenty one 21 days or more and a Board of Inquiry declares that he/she is a deserter.”
Ziyambi also revealed the police lost another 445 through deaths during the period while 1 877 resigned.
The resignations were a result of retirement, the emergence of fresh opportunities and pursuit for further studies.

Seconded. A fish rots from the head down. Senior police chiefs can hardly act decisively against corruption in their ranks as this is the water they swim in and thrive on themselves.
