Oil reserves ‘discovered’ in Zimbabwe

via Bulawayo24 NEWS | Oil reserves ‘discovered’ in Zimbabwe 28 September 2014

The state media reports that Zimbabwe could become an oil and gas producer following strong indications of significant reserves of the resources in northern parts of the country.

According to Sunday Mail, government has already commissioned mining research experts to determine the extent of the potential reserves in the Zambezi Valley.

Earlier exploration by hydrocarbons giant Mobil Oil in the 1990s concluded there was nearly “100 percent potential of gas” and a high possibility of oil occurrence in the region.

However, authorities did not prioritise further exploratory work then due to various competing national issues such as the military intervention in the DRC and the fast-track land reform programme.

But with several African countries recently announcing oil and gas finds, such as in Mozambique and Namibia, interest has been rekindled and authorities have revisited the matter.

Mines and Mining Development Secretary Professor Francis Gudyanga told The Sunday Mail: “We are working on that, but I think it is too early to make it public.”

This paper has gathered that Government mandated a team of experts to confirm the existence of the oil and gas reserves. Geo Associates and Invictus Energy Resources are assisting the Mines Ministry and the Geological Survey Department in the project.

Research shows that hydrocarbon deposits occur in sedimentary geological features less than 300 million years old.
Zimbabwe has three areas holding sedimentary geological features that fit the profile – Karoo (150-300 million years), Cretaceous (50-140 million years), and Kalahari (four-50 million years). Of these, the Zambezi Valley — which sits on Karoo sediments in the Cabora Bassa Basin — holds the most potential for gas and possibly oil.

Between 1989 and 1993, Mobil Oil explored a part of the Zambezi Valley in the Cabora Bassa Basin spanning 30 120 square kilometres.
The company concluded the area was likely to have gas, a finding corroborated by German Geological Survey BGR. BGR analysed the data and carried out extensive fieldwork and indicated the area potentially held high volumes of recoverable gas.

However, no actual drilling took place.

Sedimentologist and geological consultant Dr Dennis Shoko, who worked with Mobil on the initial exploration, said: “The work carried out by Mobil was very extensive and the results they produced were very positive. Their surveys included airborne geo-physical work. They worked on the structure of our basin in areas such as the Mana Pools, the Cabora Basin and Zambezi Basin.

“Their conclusion was that there was an almost 100 percent potential of gas, which then makes having oil a possibility. They then proposed to have a joint venture with Government to begin work that included drilling and setting up a 4km-deep borehole. But at that time, Government said it was not a priority and turned down the joint venture.”

He added: “In recent years, an oil leak was discovered in Lupane, meaning there is high chance that there is oil in the Cabora Basin, which covers the north part of the country and the area between the escarpment and the Zambezi River. Remember we also share this basin with Mozambique, which has also discovered oil.”

Investec Energy Resources’ Mr Scott Macmillan said the oil reserves — if confirmed — could turn around Zimbabwe’s economy.
He said the subject would feature prominently at the Mining Indaba scheduled for Harare next week.

“The resources could potentially provide the country with a significant new revenue base and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, be utilised as feedstock for gas-fired power turbines and bring about a solution to the perennial power shortages as well as provide energy security for the country.

“The oil reserves could turn around Zimbabwe’s economy” — Just like the diamonds did…………… If only more people had a brain or at least one that works.

Highly unlikely given the greedness amongst the zimbabwe mugabe plc. They would not have risked going all the way to the DRC in search of the stolen loot, when a great find of this magnitute was just across the north of the country.

On hindsight, it could be potentially true given the location of the find. It could spark another DRC/ or, even worse.

What is all this excitement about? I remember that a gushing diesel well was found below a kopje in the Chinhoyi area some years ago. This unbelievable and exciting event was witnessed by our Esteemed Leader and most of his hard working cabinet ministers and fuel experts from CMED…and a mysterious lady friend called Rotina Mavhunga who had supernatural powers. Surely this liquid fuel bonanza must be coming into production very soon…?

But wait a minute…I also remember that our Esteemed Leader later claimed in a newspaper interview that Rotina’s incredible beauty had blinded his Ministers and his fuel experts from CMED and that the diesel well was not such a bonanza as he had first thought.

Ah well…back to the drawing board.

Actually chaps, this is serious. Already there are Zhing Zhong digging up the Zambezi Valley for coal. Imagine the turmoil there when the thousands move in to dig for oil? Tragically the only true sufferers in this fiasco, are our wild animals. Please will someone, somewhere, step in and protect these beautiful creatures. I really want my grandchildren, and their children to know the joy of spotting an elephant in the bush.

Where in Lupane was this funny oil leak discovered?Only in Zimbabwe we have miracles, unless somebody spilled oil in that area by mistake or he was disposing used oil illegally. If this leak is there, then why waste time with more tests, just drill where the so-called leak appears.
More connected officials to become rich and environment to be damaged whilst the masses get more disappointed. This is how life is like in our country.

The army will form a joint venture with the police to mine oil and gas. A special purpose vehicle run by “Dr” Grace Mugabe will market the gas and oil in Malaysia and Singapore.

This is nothing more than an attempt to create positive news when there is none. Restive citizens must be made to feel hopeful even where there is mo hope. There is a plant somewhere in Harare supposed to produce Jatrofa oil launched with great fanfare by non other than the old man himself. Its a white elephant! Not a single drop up to now! Don’t be fooled.

Hear ye, hear ye. It’s not the mineral wealth that makes a country great. It’s the administrative wealth, stupid. The inept, the corrupt, the take-no-responsibility- turned-dictators lot never fail to turn mineral riches into resource curse, and here, I dare preach to the choir. Our very capable dictator come PhD donating husband is the prototype of ineptitude and corruption. Zimbabwe could be swimming in oil, breaking its neck under the heavy weight of inexhaustible mineral resources, but as long as the current leadership perched on a crown of idiocy continue to govern, nothing will change our fortune. Actually, it is going to be worse. It’s all up to us to make it better.

If it’s true that oil reserves are discovered in Zimbabwe, it may be a curse because the US and its henchmen from EU countries will find some excuse to send its military to Zimbabwe. Godl, Diamonds, Platinum and the rest of the natural resources take too long to dig out and too long to sell but the black gold has ready made world wide buyers for its energy need. So if its true let Zimbabwe keep it under the rugs for the time being otherwise its troubles will multiply from the illegal and criminal interference from the West! God help Zimbabwe!

“US Navy SEALS were poised for action today as rumours of oil reserves in Zimbabwe came to light. Robert Mugabe, was over-heard at the United Nations saying he had plenty of oil.
President Obama, has so far been content to observe the human rights abuses in Zimbabwe, However the mere sniff of oil has enabled him to spring into action and defend the Zimbabwean peoples right to trade their oil with the US. Following a dawn raid it was found that Mr Mugabe has been stock piling Johnsons Baby oil to keep himself shiny looking.
The White House would not comment beyond stating the ‘Oil is Oil’.” (with apologies)

Some of the comments above show total ignorance on the current international oil demands.Make a few research studies you will realise that the USA, does not need any outside oil imports because it has enough stock piles and untouched Alaska reserves. In addition they are in the process of manufacturing ethanol driven vehicles.
This is why countries like Saudi Arabia and others are looking for alternative markets. This is why the international oil prices are stable because the demand is low-maybe China needs their oil not the USA.Why then should the USA worry about our little reserves if they happen to be there?
