POLICE yesterday expressed concern over the rise in the number of road accidents and deaths this festive holiday, saying 31 people had already been killed in 515 accidents recorded since last week.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said 470 accidents and 31 deaths were recorded over the same period last year.

The number of people injured was said to be 262 as compared to 138 in December last year.

Nyathi said a total of 1 239 vehicles had been impounded for various reasons, while 52 150 tickets were issued for different traffic offences.

“The traffic accidents were caused by overspeeding, overtaking errors, inattentive drivers, as well as misjudgment and failure to give way on the part of drivers,” Nyathi said. “We are appealing to drivers to exercise caution on the roads and, above all, to respect passengers,” he said.

Masvingo had the highest number of deaths with 10, followed by Matabeleland South with seven, Mashonaland East with four, Harare (three), Bulawayo (two), Midlands (two), Mashonaland Central (one), Matabeleland North (one), Manicaland (one), while Mashonaland West did not record deaths.
