FAST-FOODS group Innscor Africa has informed its workforce that it would be retrenching its warehouse, distribution and administration section employees in Bulawayo citing viability challenges.
The retrenchment was announced to workers through a memorandum dated July 15 signed by human resource director Misheck Muleya.
Muleya said the negative economic environment was affecting the group’s operations.
“As explained in the meeting held this morning, the current economic challenges have continued to negatively affect our business performance resulting in reduced turnout and profitability,” wrote Muleya to workers.
“As a result, the company has embarked on a restructuring exercise part of which entails retrenchment to streamline service departments.
“These will for now include warehouse and distribution and various administration staff.
“Accordingly and as advised in the meeting alluded to above, volunteers are invited to apply for voluntary retrenchment /separation.”
Muleya did not specify how many workers were likely to be affected, but said the firm “reserves the right to turn down a request from any employee who would have applied for voluntary retrenchment and where this happens, reasons will be given for such a decision”.
Workers have up to July 30 to apply for voluntary retrenchment.
The planned job cuts come at a time Bulawayo has recorded massive company closures in the past few years throwing thousands of workers onto the streets every year.
Scores of small and large scale Bulawayo companies have either relocated, downsized or closed shop altogether.
According to the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), close to 20 000 workers have lost their jobs since 2009 as companies cease operations due to the economic recession.

Why Bulawayo? we understand that companies to manage ZIMRA demands are now closing shops or retrenching.There are some areas which are understaffed and needs these excess staff in Bulawayo.
How will the residents of the town survive? and on the other hand countries like Botswana will no longer be accepting people from the country what does the continent expect the people to do ?
Maybe they could try rising up and taking control of their destiny instead of always cowering in the shadows or asking other nations to rescue them?
Let them close,we have suffered before in the hands of these people ,therefore we will find other means of surviving.We are a tested people who can with stand cheap politics with total dignity.In any case-How many of these employees are from Bulawayo? You will be surprised that 90% of them are from the east of the country,therefore it makes no difference to the real Bulawayo residents.
