Police in Harare have reportedly summoned two MDC-T youth leaders over an anti-government protest that was staged by party youths in Harare on Thursday.

Hundreds of youths had gathered in central Harare to protest against the government of President Robert Mugabe, blaming him for failing to create jobs or improve the economy. Armed riot police with water cannons were brought onto the streets to control the crowd.

The usually trigger-happy police kept their distance despite being abused and called names by the combative youths. There were no clashes despite the uneasy relation that exists between the MDC-T and the authorities.

Following the protests the law and order section of the police has been looking for Costa Machingauta and Clifford Hlatswayo, two of the leaders who addressed the gathering outside Harvest House.

A source told us that three police officers in plain clothes visited Hlatswayo’s waterfalls home on Friday afternoon looking for him. The youth leader was reportedly in the city attending to party business.

The two leaders had castigated the ZANU PF government for bad governance; a situation they said had brought the country to its knees.
