Government is working on re-introducing practical subjects in schools to complement the theoretical education already offered, President Mugabe has said.
The President was speaking at a mass held for the late Roman Catholic priest and founder of Silveira House, Father John Dove in Chishawasha yesterday evening.
President Mugabe said ministries such as that of Liaising on Psychomotor Activities in Education and Vocational Training were meant to advance that agenda.
President Mugabe said no matter how theoretically educated a person could be, without knowledge of practical skills, one was as good as nothing.
“Nekuti fundo yaivepo kare kunyangwe dai yanga iri pasi asi hapana mwanasikana angaite makore manomwe obva asingagone kusona, kurima kana kubika.
(Because the education was there in the past even though it was lowly, but no girl child could spend seven years then leave without skills like sewing, farming or cooking),” President Mugabe said.
He chronicled how his late sisters Sabina and Bridget were groomed at Silveira before Independence and how his late wife Amai Sally Mugabe worked with the late Father Dove at Mutemwa Leprosy Centre in Mutoko.
President Mugabe, who was accompanied by Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa, invited Silveira House to work with Government in re-introducing these subjects in youths.
The President said he had been deeply touched by news of the priest’s demise as he had not heard any word of his illness. He extolled the virtues of Fr Dove and said he would be forever immortalised through Silveira House.
Fr Dove died on Friday morning at the Avenues Clinic in Harare at the age of 92. John Dove was born on July 22 1922 at Mayme, Burma (now Myanmar).
He fought in the British army during the Second World War. He then entered the Society of Jesus on September 7 1949 at Manresa, Roehampton, UK, and was ordained priest nine years later on July 31 1958 at Heythrop, UK.
The funeral mass will be held today at Chishawasha at 10am followed by his interment immediately thereafter at the mission.

Even if the college introduces the practicals, finance will be a constraint as the zanupf gvt is facing a ‘liquidity crunch’ that will last quite a while as 12 months have passed with all efforts in vain
Mugabe speaks like somebody else stopped those practicals and left the education system in the state it is now. Its him who has been responsible for the all round lower standards of education and the mess that is there now.
He has literally destroyed everything and now he wants to look surprised like it was someone’s else fault. Its time he took responsibility and own up.
Can’t he see that he doesn’t have the stamina to run the country any more, just being selfish, he and his corrupt cronies.
Who stopped them in the first place, in the name that F2 were colonial and meant to oppress the blackman to manual work.
Yet they always tell us he is a consistent leader….”socialism”, “one man one vote”, “leadership code”, “cooperative”, “one party state”, “one man one farm”, “51 percent black ownership.”
I am surprised some so called intellectuals believe him.
Any chance that Mugarbage could actually take a leaf out of Dove’s book and start serving the community first?

The Youth colleges already have practicals and still the youth are roaming the streets. Agricultural colleges and universities churn Agric graduates but even they are finding jobs elsewhere outside Zimbabwe. We are in the knowledge economy. For example while we grow tobacco we must also think of the future as tobacco depletes our forest. Practicals, theory, research….we all need them. But that is NOT THE problem. The problem is the political-economy and all its inconsiderate sef-serving stakeholders. NXX!!

mugabe is out of touch with reality…. create a conducive investment environment then FDIs flows in business flourish then the youths will get employed n start using those skill. he is too old to realize that UZ, NUST, CUT, MSU are producing degreed youths with advanced practical skills bt the environment is not enabling. i hev seen Agricultural engineer teaching primary school what a waste of skills
