The Orphan Queen

via The Orphan Queen The Zimbabwean 14 January 2015

When the waters of Tokwe River washed away the homes of 3 400 families, the generosity of the Mugabes was nowhere in evidence.

When 740 000 underprivileged primary school pupils and 250 000 high scholars were stuck without tuition fees in January 2014, following the bankruptcy of BEAM (Basic Education Assistance Module) there was none of that ‘kindness’ from President Mugabe or his wife, the Orphan Queen.

In October 2013, with the rainy season a month away, Grace Mugabe evicted 50 families and 11 small scale miners from a piece of land adjoining the First Lady’s farm. After a fleet of bulldozers had levelled their homes, we heard nothing about the resettlement of these people.

Despite all these misdeeds, somehow Grace managed to end 2014 with a philanthropist of the year award on her mantelpiece, to add to her dubious doctorate, completed in a record time of two months.

Showing the hollowness of her ‘philanthropist of the year’ plaque, she has opened the new year by making a further 200 families homeless, just so she can expand her already vast empire in Mazowe. Those heartless minions of Mugabe – the ZRP riot squad – arrived in a convoy of six lorries and tore down the homes of helpless civilians, leaving them without shelter in the unforgiving January rain and its accompaniment of bloodthirsty mosquitoes.

She did not stop there – 600 more families have been given notice to leave their farms to make way for Her Empirical Highness. Grace wants to convert the entire area into a game farm – which is like those movies of nouveau riche opulence, where some greedy fat cat keeps a black panther in a gilded cage, simply to advertise his wealth.
