A FIVE-MEMBER business delegation from the United Kingdom arrived in the country yesterday for a three-day working visit and to scout for business opportunities.
The delegation met Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa at his offices at New Government Complex in Harare.
Chinamasa described the visit as a first step towards normalisation of relations between Harare and London after they severed ties almost 20 years ago.
“They are on a mission to investigate areas of co-operation, areas of investment opportunities and they are investigating how they can facilitate the implementation of our Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZimAsset) economic programme,” Chinamasa said.
“This is their first visit, the first visit by a British trade delegation after many years, probably over 20 years. It is marking the first step in the normalisation of relations.”
British ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing said the delegation had come into the country to understand the realities of doing business in Zimbabwe.
“The promised clarification of the indigenisation policy is welcome, which, if handled well, could have a major impact. The government must also show observers that rule of law is paramount, underlining this message as much in political rhetoric as in the conduct of its institutions,” Laing said.
Head of delegation Alex Lambeth said: “We hope that our visit will be a chance to build long-term relationships with Zimbabwean partners. Our programme includes meetings across the private sector and public sector to help us understand more about Zimbabwe’s development objectives and where international expertise could provide the most assistance.”
