The Zimbabwe Mail photojournalist Angela Jimu who was allegedly assaulted and detained by police on Monday morning has been released after more than 4 hours in the hands of the Harare Central police.

In a tweet posted late Monday afternoon, The Zimbabwe Mail confirmed Jimu’s release but could not immediately give further details when NewsDay replied to the tweet.

Jimu was allegedly assaulted and detained while covering an MDC-T demonstration in Hararce city centre.

As a result of the assault, Jimu is alleged to have suffered a swollen arm.

The incident, which occurred a day after Zimbabwe took over the chairmanship of the Sadc regional bloc, courted the ire of journalists and media freedom defenders who immediately launched a campaign to demand the release of the photojournalist.
