HARARE – The savage Zanu PF intra-party fighting that exploded in Mutare on Friday at Grace Mugabe’s rally exposes the ruling party for what it is: a declining movement which banks on its famed PhDs in violence and thuggery to remain in power, as its 90-year-old leader once boasted.

The shameful violence also exposed the myth that Grace is a unifier in President Robert Mugabe’s faction-ridden party.

If anything, the anarchy showed her up as an individual who divides opinion more than any other Zimbabwean politician.

But there was a small, inadvertent positive outcome to that chaos in Mutare.

Grace was able to witness, first-hand, the ugly spectre of political violence that millions of ordinary Zimbabweans, especially opposition supporters, have to live with every day of their lives, propagated in the main by crazed Zanu PF apparatchiks.

Hopefully, she now has a better understanding of the violent  dynamics of her party, and will take this important lesson to her husband, who often acts as if he inhabits a different planet from the rest of humanity.

As the Daily News reported on Saturday, the Mutare fracas occurred when youths believed to be loyal to the beleaguered Zanu PF secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa, took umbrage to provocation and underhand manoeuvres by their counterparts from Harare, who were led by the controversial Godwin Gomwe — an über First Lady zealot.

One of the Harare victims of the violence even claimed he was attacked with a machete by the equally controversial Manicaland provincial executive member Sheila Mutsenhu — of the infamous “birthday suit” politics, and a Mutasa disciple.

And at the weekend, the violence occurred in Harare where Zanu PF provincial political commissar, Shadreck Mashayamombe’s young brother was assaulted and the case is now with the police who are investigating the thuggery.

The worsening violent infighting within Zanu PF also exposes starkly the blatant lie that it is in fact the opposition that is the source of political violence in Zimbabwe.

This lie is perpetrated by Zanu PF and lapdog State media despite the well-known fact that tens of thousands of opposition supporters have died needlessly at the hands of the Zanu PF government and its supporters, beginning with the estimated 20 000 innocent civilians who were murdered in cold blood in Matabeleland and the Midlands in the early 1980s.
