Zanu-PF is set to embark on a massive audit and verification exercise of its structures countrywide with high-powered teams led by Politburo members conducting head counts of its members from cell to branch levels. The verification exercise to start from next week, will be preceded by Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meetings set for this Saturday in all 10 provinces for logistical preparations.
Teams are expected to present their reports to the Commissariat by end of next month.
The exercise follows a meeting held in Harare on Monday by the Zanu-PF Commissariat department and provincial chairpersons as well as team leaders.
Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, national political commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere and party national spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, said the exercise would leave Zanu-PF on a sound footing.
Cde Kasukuwere announced the names of Politburo members who will lead the teams comprised of Central Committee members who were randomly assigned.
Cde Patrick Chinamasa will be in charge of the Bulawayo team while Dr Obert Mpofu will lead the Harare team.
Cde Sydney Sekeramayi will chair the Manicaland team with Cde Kembo Mohadi in charge of Mashonaland Central while Cde Edna Madzongwe will lead the team in Mashonaland East.
The Mashonaland West team will be led by Cde Josiah Hungwe while Dr Joram Gumbo will be in charge of the Masvingo team.
Professor Jonathan Moyo will lead the team in Matabeleland South with Cde Simon Khaya Moyo will lead the one in Matabeleland North, while Cde Sandi Moyo will be in charge of Midlands province.
Said Cde Kasukuwere: “We have instructed Provincial Co-ordinating Committee meetings to be held this Saturday where all these members I talked about will be meeting the PCC in preparation and mapping a way forward for the verification programme.
“So I encourage all members of the Central Committee who have been assigned this responsibility to join their team leaders in their respective provinces and meet and chat the way forward.”
He said the revolutionary party would soon introduce membership cards with a chip to replace the old cards.
He said Prof Moyo who is the Zanu-PF secretary for Science and Technology in the Politburo, had already presented a sample of the card to the meeting that was held on Monday and received backing from party officials.
Cde Khaya Moyo said the teams would be expected to preach a message of unity when out in the provinces.
He said team leaders had clear terms of reference.
“First, they have to physically check on the existence of recently restructured cells and villages and branches in all the administrative districts of the provinces. The national commissar has toured all the provinces and this is a follow up to what we expect to unfold as the verification teams move across the country.
“Secondly, to physically count cell members with identification documents, so as to ensure that the structure really exists. In other words, we must ascertain that when we talk of a cell, it exists and there are members constituting that cell.
“That of course will apply to other areas in terms of the branches.
“During the verification process, the Politburo team leaders will be assisted by members of the Central Committee.
“It’s important as I said earlier, we are a family and we must work collectively. Therefore members of the Central Committee will play a major role there, so are provincial and district executive members and affiliate associations at the provincial and district levels.
“Where structures have not been constituted at cell, village and branch levels, the Politburo team will cause the formation of these structures in all the administrative districts of the province using the provincial and district teams under their charge,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
He said there was also need for the ruling party to expend energy on economic transformation by focusing on Zim-Asset so that people’s livelihoods could improve.
Cde Kasukuwere said the revolutionary party was ready to win the by-elections in Mt Darwin West and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituencies that fell vacant following the elevation of former Vice President Joice Mujuru and Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa respectively.
He said Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko was expected to officially launch the Zanu-PF campaign tomorrow in Mt Darwin West where Cde Barnwell Seremwe will represent the revolutionary party adding that all was set for Cde Auxillia Mnangagwa to romp to victory in Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituency.
The by-elections in the two constituencies are set for March 27, 2015.
Cde Kasukuwere said Zanu-PF was also readying itself for other by-elections in Wedza North Constituency that fell vacant following the death of Cde Simon Musanhu as well as Headlands and Hurungwe West constituencies that became vacant after the expulsion from Parliament of Mr Didymus Mutasa and Mr Temba Mliswa respectively.

What is the cost of all this ‘head counting’ and who is financing? This is a first and it is obviously a strategy to consolidate power by making sure those who are pro-the Mnangagwa, Gang of four make up the mooted structures. This is being done so that in event of the Mutasa, Gumbo court action being successful there are hand-picked delegates for the imminent Congress.
Further why not just call all your members to exchange the old cards for new ones but going through this? A tactic to intimidate people at grassroots. These schemers never cease to amaze! If the same energy and diligence was used to build the country’s economy, Zimbabwe would be the light-house of Africa on the same footing with first world countries. Alas, all that is important is power and self enrichment for a few and damnation of the rest of the population.
