HARARE – As widely expected, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s wife Auxillia won the Chirumhanzu-Zibangwe constituency in by-elections that were boycotted by the main opposition parties.

Barnwell Seremwe, yet another Zanu PF candidate, was victorious in the Mt Darwin West Constituency by-elections polling 18 315.

Keeping it in the family, Auxillia polled 16 092 to replace her husband who was promoted to vice president post by President Robert Mugabe last year.

Opposition parties and independent candidates on the other hand performed dismally failing to score a combined 1 000 votes.

Little known opposition outfit Good People’s Movement candidate Dewa Gadzamoyo managed a paltry 86 votes while Independent candidate Kanoti Chawawona could only afford 257 votes.

Transform Zimbabwe’s Abigail Musambasi was the best of all the opposition candidates garnering 456 votes.

However, Lovemore Madhuku’s National Constitutional Assembly candidate Munashe Mutodza attained the least votes managing just 79.

Seremwe fills the post that was left vacant after Mnangagwa’s predecessor Joice Mujuru was sworn in as the vice president in 2013.

However, the highlight of the largely incident free elections was the refusal by the main opposition parties to take parties in the polls citing the uneven playing ground.

The MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai says it will not take part in any future elections unless the Zanu PF dominated Parliament aligns the Electoral Act with the new constitution.
