ZIMBABWE has a shortfall of 2 056 schools with the country facing hurdles in building new infrastructure owing to economic challenges, a government minister has said.
On Thursday, primary and secondary school education minister, Lazarus Dokora, said government needed to partner with private players in order
to address the shortfall and build new schools.
He said findings of a 2013 education infrastructure audit exercise revealed that 2 056 schools were required to meet the expected education standards.
“Because of the economic challenges we are facing government alone cannot deliver such infrastructure hence the need to partner with churches and companies,” Dokora said at the Seventh Day Adventist Church Schools Conference at Mkoba Teachers’ College in Gweru.
Dokora said in the coming weeks his ministry would float tenders for private companies to partner with government in building schools.
He also said his ministry had made proposals to re-introduce the building fund to cover for the schools shortages.
Meanwhile Dokora said government has plans to scrap Integrated Science and replace it with General Science while Agriculture should be introduced from primary school level to Advanced level.
