Over 18,000 job seekers are on its waiting list but the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has stopped recruiting.

Senior police officers told The Zimbabwean that it was not clear when training would be resumed. In 2013, ZRP reportedly recruited an unplanned 10,000 policemen to beef-up manpower ahead of the constitutional referendum and the elections. The sources said training had stopped because ZRP had almost reached its employee ceiling of around 40,000.

“It is clear that ZRP still needs more details as stations are understaffed, a situation that has been made worse by poor priorities in the deployment of details.

For instance, you find that PGHQ has too many junior officers doing virtually nothing while some stations are starved,” said another police source.

He said the discharge section was overwhelmed with officers who are tendering resignations, retiring or have been compulsorily ejected.

The numbers of those leaving the force could not be ascertained and it was also not clear to what extent the discharges were affecting staff numbers.
