Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister Emmerson Mnangagwa will on Tuesday address belated commemorations to mark the International Human Rights Day in Harare.

The event, to be hosted by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), will see the public, Civic society organisation (CSO) and ZHRC representatives march through the streets of Harare from ZHRC offices to Harare Gardens where Mnangagwa will give a key note address.

ZHRC acting chairperson Ellen Sithole in a statement, yesterday said:

“As a newly established institution which is keen to build mutually beneficial partnerships in the country, the ZHRC while taking the lead, recognises and has taken initiative to host this important event in collaboration with other key stakeholders with a central role in the promotion and protection of human rights in Zimbabwe.”

This year’s joint commemorations were run under the theme ‘20 years: working for your rights’.

International Human Rights Day is commemorated on 10 December annually. It is celebrated worldwide in respect of the United Nation’s 1948 Declaration of Human Rights.

Representatives from various CSOs are also expected to address the gathering.
