Zimbabwe gained six places to 157 out of 177 countries among the most corrupt countries in the world in the latest ranking by global watchdog, Transparency International in its 2013 index which shows that bribery and abuse of power remains a scourge in most societies around the world.
The southern African nation is perceived to be highly corrupt, after scoring 21 points in the 2013 index out of a possible 100. It scored 20 points in 2012.
Zimbabwe set up an anti-corruption commission in 2011 but the terms of its office bearers expired in August and its chief executive Ngonidzashe Gumbo is in jail, facing charges of defrauding the commission of $435 000. Gumbo denies the charges.
African countries make up more than half of the most corrupt in the world and Zimbabwe is among the 10 most egregious ahead of Eritrea, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Yemen, Libya, South Sudan, Sudan and Somalia.
Botswana remains the least corrupt on the continent after improving its ranking to 30 from 65 in 2012.
More than 90 percent of the countries in the sub-Saharan Africa region scored below 50.

Ah take another business
This article really shows us what the “Anti-Corruption Commission” is all about. Put a crook in charge as Chief Executive, and then the corrupt “big fish” can easily bribe him to sweep their corruption under the carpet! The anti corruption commission is more about hiding corruption than stopping it.
No! No! I cant believe it! Zimbabwe the most corrupt country??!! Wow with all these nice ministers and honest president, and all the super police force and cio’s and those cute zanoid people! That really surprises me!! Oh,Oh and all those brave generals and people who have been accused by South African courts for torture…I dont believe a word of it!

What a legacy for a president who always tirelessly bleats about “the gains of our independence”. Up there on the top of the list is what a corrupt president will be remembered for, making Zim one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Beneath that will be hunger, disease, potholes and unemployment. That is what Mugabe has bequeathed to the people of Zimbabwe in 34 years of dictatorship. Sadly he is proud of his record.
An anti-corruption squad existed for years, but obviously it was as useless as our billion dollar Zimbabwean dollar bills.
Do take note that it’s not just the politicians who are corrupt. Corruption is also a reflection of our cultural values. Heck, corruption is obvious in the following example situations;
a) Having to know somebody, who knows somebody, who may or may not know somebody, just to get a simple task done (when the same exact thing can be done in other countries without the use of middlemen).
b) Having to give the mechanic, carpenter or other professional a little “something” to move his/her pen so you can get the job done on time.
c) The modern roora/lobola system, which is basically parasitic extortion being disguised as tradition.
d) The things that motorists and kombi drivers typically do to avoid getting a ticket at a police roadblock.
We can blame politicians until the sun goes down, but for as long as we act a bit crooked ourselves, we might end up winning the Guinness record for being corrupt. Already, we are almost on par with the Nigerians. Who would want to do business with folks who aspire to be utterly untrustworthy?
Jongwe Power -well said mate(though i hate the name) this is really what is there in our society and as long as that continues forget about our society being rid of corruption. But however remember,if as parents we display immoral behaviour in front of our children, do we expect the children to behave well in society? The child of a prostitute will in most cases admire and aspire to lead the same kind of life. This is the case in Zim. We are children of immoral parents, our Government.
Sorry Jongwe Power corruption starts at the top and filters down to the masses who believe if it is ok for the chefs then it is ok for everyone else.
We failed in soccer then we are doing better in corruption, i hope we will improve to 190 then become a leader.
We have a government which got into power thru corrupt means and what do you expect?
