Zimbabwe should learn from Cuba says Mzembi

via Bulawayo24 NEWS | Zimbabwe should learn from Cuba says Mzembi 01 December 2013

The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Engineer Walter Mzembi says Zimbabwe should tap from Cuba’s thriving tourism industry that has managed to attract tourists and contribute immensely to the national economy despite the harsh economic sanctions imposed on them by the United States.

Minister Mzembi said this during his meeting with the visiting Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister, Bruno Rodriguez Parija on Sunday.

Mzembi commended Cuba for managing to turn adversity into opportunity, saying the Cuban tourism sector has managed to thrive under the toughest conditions of the economic sanctions imposed on them by the United States of America.

He added that the country has also thrived under harsh climatic conditions and competition from other countries in the Americas.

He said Zimbabwe cannot continue using other countries which are not operating under sanctions as a benchmark but should tap from Cuba, as the two countries have the same situation.

But there are no sanctions on Zimbabwe… it’s all in their minds! ZANU-PF continues to alledge that they are facing sanctions, but unlike Cuba and Iran, any Zim company can trade with any American company at any time. In fact, today the US is one of Zimbabwe’s largest trading partners, which is something that neither Cuba nor Iran can say. At least those countries are honest about the hurdles they face, as they surmount them – unlike the current government of Zimbabwe which is made up of a bunch of crybabies!

And surprisingly, this contradiction is never mentioned by people.

The Cuban people leave their homeland in large numbers to go to USA because their own situation is not any better. If Cuba is good benchmark of how our lives should be then these ZPF people have very low regard to how their own citizens quality of life. Why dont we compare ourselves with countries whose benchmark is of high quality. If you aim low you will also get low results. In Japan if a train is 1 minute late it is considered late, and heads will roll. Is this not the type of quality standards that we should be aiming for our citizens?

While we’re at it with praising our fellow Communist comrades, how about our Minister of Agriculture takes a few pages from Cuba’s book on how to do farming. Despite being under sanctions for about 60 years (full blockade, not a shopping ban), Cuba has been able to feed its population using organic and sustainable agriculture. Heck, half of the tourists that Mzembi is talking about are visiting Cuba primarily to see the peri-urban gardens and dine on organic food.

Meanwhile, Zimbabweans can’t feed half their population, because our government has not bothered to teach the resettled farmers how to farm. Waiting until December to throw seeds and synthetic fertilisers in the ground is not farming.

MOST Zimbabweans do not have a choice to be anything else apart from being Zimbabwean. They are Zimbabwean and nothing will take-away their Zimbabweanness; not even the terror, the horror and the dread spread by Robert Mugabe. They are not Zimbabwean by choice but by birth. Mugabe treats Zimbabweans like contents of a sanitary night-bucket that exude the eerie smell associated with organic decay. It seems Mugabe is taking solace from the uncanny knowledge of their allegiance to Zimbabwe to cut their short and miserable lives even shorter and more miserable. He has managed to reduce their pride and their virility to the lowest state ever, turning men into women and women into toys for his games of perverted pleasure.
We do not have a choice to be anything else but weeping, mourning, crying and lamenting Zimbabweans.Chinese businessmen, the fugitives like Mengistu of Ethiopia and others so sacred and so well protected by Mugabe’s claws of insanity. These are the few people who have choices. They could be Zimbabwean only by choice. They have elsewhere to fall back to when the chips go down. We remain without choice when it comes to citizenship. We are stuck in a sinking ship with Mugabe at the helm. We cannot jettison ourselves because we are chained to Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. If we could temporarily break the chains of Mugabe’s Zimbabwean-ness and jump over-board, the cold waters that are infested with hungry sharks would welcome us.
