-------------------------------------------------------------------------- JOHN
FABER UPDATE John is getting stronger, he still has a temperature but that
was expected. Internal bleeding has stopped. The family is hugely
appreciative of concern and support given. The JAG Trust would like to
thank everyone for the incredible response to the appeal for help with A-
Blood.
We would like to assure everyone who responded and those regular
donors who donated that apart from the critical shortage being averted, all
responses have been recorded and stored for future use in any
similar emergency/crisis situations. All those of rare blood type or
universal donor type blood groups are welcome to register with us as part of
an ongoing community initiative.
In the meantime prayers are requested
for the speedy recovery of John Faber.

HARARE,
Zimbabwe, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Police in Zimbabwe are investigating the
disappearance of animal skins and historic artifacts from one of the
country's leading museums.
The Chronicle, a newspaper in Harare, says
that the missing items from the Bulawayo Natural History Museum could be
sold for millions of dollars in South Africa. The loss was discovered by a
storekeeper several weeks ago.
The Chronicle reports that museum
officials turned the matter over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police after an
internal investigation failed to get anywhere. Police have fingerprinted
museum employees.
The newspaper says that the museum, guarded by police
24 hours a day, has a history of thefts.
"This is a well orchestrated
scam, it has been going on for a long time and this is a tip of the iceberg,
we must have lost more through these clandestine deals," a source told the
paper.

Staff Reporter Last updated: 10/09/2004 09:15:47 THE lawyer representing
Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in his treason trial, South
African George Bizos, has been named winner of the 2004 Bernard Simons
Memorial Award
The International Bar Association (IBA) on Friday night
announced George Bizos as the winner of its prestigious award for Bizos'
role in the "advancement of human rights".
"The Award is being made
to Mr Bizos for his outstanding contribution to human rights law in South
Africa," the International Bar Association said in a statement released from
London.
Bizos will receive his award at the IBA's annual Conference in
Auckland 25 October this month.
Nelson Mandela, one of the many who
nominated Bizos for the Award, said: "I know of no person more worthy for
this honour."
As a student during the late 1940s, George Bizos fought,
against racism, and for the promotion of human rights. He has been
associated with many landmark trials on South Africa's road to democracy,
and was Nelson Mandela's lawyer throughout the infamous Rivonia Trials
during the 1960s.
Throughout the 1990s, George Bizos played a central
role in establishing constitutional law and investigating apartheid-era
crimes for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
More recently, he
has been involved in a critical case in Zimbabwe, heading the defence for
leaders of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change on charges of high
treason.
Judgement in the treason trial is expected next
Friday.
The Award, sponsored by LexisNexis Matthew Bender, will be
presented to George Bizos during the apt Human Rights Institute Session on
Politicisation of the judiciary.
President Yoweri Museveni's statement in support of
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's land-grabbing policy has raised
eyebrows and set tongues wagging. Museveni can be a skillful diplomat, but
it's hard to resist asking what message he thought he was sending to
investors with his public avowal of support for Mugabe. Even those who share
Museveni's instinct to express solidarity with land-deprived Zimbabweans
agree that his stance was unwarranted and a blatant attempt to reconstruct
Mugabe's tattered image - not worth the price. Whatever his definitely
calculated motive, Museveni's timing could not have been worse. He spoke in
support of Mugabe's brutal, anti-investment policy barely a day after the
showcase of our campaign to attract investors, the Uganda Manufacturers
Association trade fair, opened in Kampala. Potential investors from about 30
countries, with 600 exhibitions, were expected to join local seekers of
business opportunity at the weeklong fair that is designed as a one-stop
deal-cutting centre.
Unfortunately for the trade fair organisers and
the Uganda Investment Authority strategists who have been attempting to lure
some of the Mugabe-wary White farmers to Uganda, Museveni appears to have
buried the deal. For many Ugandans, recent TV images of Zimbabwean
commercial farms being ransacked and handed over to clueless party
youth-wingers, were reminiscent of former President Idi Amin Dada's
expulsion of Asian entrepreneurs in the early 1970s. Many of us watched with
anxiety and pity. We knew what would happen even before that economy started
to crumble. So what aspect of the land grabbing policy does Museveni
support? Is it the purported empowering of the landless Africans or the
forceful deprivation of the white farmers? Is this the price we must pay for
what Museveni claims Uganda owes Zimbabwe as "leaders of the liberation
movement?" It smacks of the same unprogressive streak that drove Libyan
leader, Muamar Gadhaffi, to lecture Ugandans about the rights of
revolutionaries.
Earlier this month, the state media in Zimbabwe quoted
an unnamed IMF official as saying that the economic situation in the country
had "improved dramatically". But a fortnight later, when the IMF released
the report of the mission that visited the country in March, the official
line was revised. Addressing the UN general assembly in New York, President
Robert Mugabe insisted that the economy was recovering and accused the IMF
of "strange mouthings, lies and fabrications about our situation". The
report of the IMF - which this week closed its Harare office in a sign of
frustration with Zimbabwe's political leadership - is remarkably forthright.
It notes that the 30% decline in Zimbabwe's GDP over the past five years -
with a further forecast 4,5% fall in 2004 - "mainly reflects the inadequacy
of economic policies", while the "disorderly implementation" of the land
reform programme has "sharply reduced" agricultural production. The economic
decline has had "dire social consequences", the IMF says , warning that
unemployment is high and increasing, social indicators have deteriorated and
the HIV/Aids pandemic remains "largely unchecked", with one person in four
HIV-positive. "Severe food shortages" have caused a "vicious cycle of
malnourishment and disease".
Concerns over governance, the rule
of law, human rights and property rights have "severely damaged confidence,
discouraged investment and promoted capital flight and emigration", the
report says. Citing the "disruptive effects" of land reform, the IMF quotes
an official report that found that actual resettlement of 134 452 families
and 6,4m ha fell far short of government's claimed 350 000 families and 11m
ha. Independent reports estimate unemployed farm workers and their families
at more than 1m people, or about 9% of the population. Far from praising the
"new" monetary policy that Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono launched in
December, the IMF details a long list of essential reforms, including
tighter monetary and fiscal policies, the phasing out of concessional loans
that government is using to keep firms and exporters afloat, and abolition
of the overvalued official exchange rate of Z$824/US$ compared with an
auction rate of Z$5 616. It criticises the foreign currency auction launched
in January, saying it is "heavily managed" and should be changed
"decisively" to reinvigorate exports and contain import demand. It shows
that exports, which government says have recovered, fell from US$2,3bn in
2000 to an estimated $1,2bn in 2003, and predicts a further decline to
$1,13bn in the current year. Foreign arrears have risen fivefold from $400m
in 2000 to $2,1bn last year and will increase to $2,6bn by
end-2004.
Little of this is new to Zimbabweans, despite the state
media's efforts to present a more favourable picture. The IMF says that
though the authorities agree with its medium-term recommendations, "they
indicated no intention to ease the excessive regulations and economic
distortions" that have occurred. It assumes that government will adopt a
"more determined" anti-inflation policy after the parliamentary elections
next March and that this will set the tone for a medium term recovery. In
the interim, however, it expects heavy pre-election spending to result in
further declines in the exchange rate and to revive inflation, forecasting
year-end inflation next year of 436%, up from less than 200% at the end of
this year. In his monetary policy review next month, Gono may be forced to
devalue the Zimbabwe dollar again, but he is unlikely to take the IMF's
advice and tighten monetary and fiscal policy by phasing out cheap loans and
special state support schemes for business.
Zimbabwe Ruling Party Retains Parliamentary Seat VOA News 09
Oct 2004, 18:02 UTC
Zimbabwean officials say the ruling ZANU-PF party
has retained a parliamentary seat by default after the main opposition party
failed to put up a by-election candidate. Officials say ruling party
candidate Walter Mzembi won the seat left vacant by the death of prominent
ZANU-PF figure Eddison Zvobgo in August.
The opposition Movement for
Democratic Change did not put up a candidate for the southern Masvingo seat
by Friday's deadline.
The opposition party has suspended participation in
all elections until Zimbabwe introduces sweeping electoral reforms that meet
the regional election standards of the Southern African Development
Community. Those standards call for an independent election commission to
supervise polling and election preparations.
But the government says
it has embraced the SADC guidelines.
Zimbabwe's
government is tightening restrictions on human rights groups operating in
the country, reports say. French news agency AFP says it has seen an
official amendment to a bill tabled in parliament earlier this
week.
The bill bans international rights groups from working in
Zimbabwe and cuts foreign funding to local groups dealing with "governance
issues".
Groups involved in educating the public on anti-corruption
issues, transparency and accountability are also targeted.
The amendment proposed by Zimbabwe's social welfare ministry also means that
groups involved in aiding the interests or activities of a political party
will also be targeted, according to the AFP.
The Non-Governmental
Organisations Bill previously had not spelled out what activities would be
included under the definition of "issues of governance".
There
are fears that hundreds of aid groups will be forced to shut down if the
bill becomes law.
Correspondents say up to 10,000 jobs could be
lost as the result.
The proposed bill has provoked widespread
condemnation, the AFP said.
Why Museveni must watch
out --------------------------------------------------------------------------
President Yoweri Museveni must be careful when dealing with his counterpart
in Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.
Libya was once a good friend of
Zimbabwe. Now Libya is a sellout because of its friendship with
America.
Then came Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo was a good friend of
Mugabe but now he is an enemy as well.
Zimbabwean Minister of
Finance and the Reserve Bank Governor are in the USA in a meeting with IMF
trying to source some funds for the poverty-stricken
Zimbabweans.
Who is fooling who? Is Mugabe fooling everybody
here?
Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2004 10:34 PM Subject: Manna from
heaven
Dear Family and Friends,
It took me a while to work out
what was happening in Marondera on Friday morning as streams of luxury cars
came into town. The four wheel drive vehicles were double and triple parked
outside our one and only hotel and for the first time in a fortnight petrol
was freely available. At the biggest local supermarket there wasn't a trolley
to be had as extravagantly dressed nouveau riche women stocked up on piles of
imported snacks and drinks. At the check out counter two women dripping
jewelry and scarlet nail varnish handed over a crumpled cheque that had been
made out in advance for one million dollars. They chatted loudly about the
fact that were off to the "bash" in Mocambique. This is the latest
music concert to be supported and promoted by our government and we've
been swamped with adverts every half hour day and night on radio and TV
urging us to go to Mocambique and celebrate. The State media has talked
about little else all week and the propaganda has left little air time for
any other news, even that of the 50 WOZA women arrested after walking
440 kilometres to protest at the impending NGO Bill.
Leaving the
supermarket I couldn't stop thinking about the women and their million
dollars worth of snacks for the weekend and wondered how much high protein
soya food I could have bought for the Christopher Campaign with that amount
of money.
Just three months ago I wrote a letter describing the plight of
people living with HIV and AIDS in the poor and overcrowded suburbs of
Marondera. In particular I wrote about one man I had visited and how
desperately he needed help. Hundreds of people responded from all over the
world and with the help of the Marondera Rotary Club the Christopher Campaign
was launched.
Parcels have poured in from all over the world with
things that may seem like basic goods to you, but to people who are sick and
poor, they are the height of luxury: disposable gloves, antiseptic creams,
multivitamins, toothpaste, soap, lotions and painkillers. In three months
only one parcel has been seized by Customs but it took just one phone call
and an explanation of what an adult diaper was and who it was for, and the
parcel was immediately released. So many people have been so generous that
the Christopher Campaign is now supporting a Hospice home visiting nurse
who has 30 people on her rounds. The Campaign is purchasing enough
high protein soya food to give 3 dozen people one nutritious meal a day
each month. The Christopher Campaign has been called manna from heaven but
this is thanks to all of you. The deposits are all arriving but are a
nightmare as they are not accompanied by names or places so it's a bit like
doing a jigsaw puzzle wearing a blindfold! Because of his work on The
Christopher Campaign, our Marondera Rotary President has been invited to a
conference on AIDS in Egypt in December but we don't know yet if he will be
able to attend because of the cost of the air fare. As I promised when we
started the Christopher Campaign, not a single dollar has been diverted or
abused.
If I haven't thanked you yet for either a deposit or a parcel
please contact me or any of the people on the Christopher Team. We are
all volunteers but do as much as we can at night and on the weekends so
please don't stop helping us. Thanks to you we were able to give Christopher
a decent burial; we paid outstanding doctors and hospital bills and are
now changing lives, restoring dignity and letting people know that they
are not forgotten. Please contact any of the addresses below if you would
like to know more about, or be involved in The Christopher Campaign.
Until next week, with love, cathy.
